I'm trying to download the browser on my computer. Every time I have tried, it stops at 44% and says Internet Explorer cannot download firefox setup.exe from www.mirrorservice.org because the server was reset. I have tried several times. At first, i was saving the file instead of running, and it would tell me the file was corrupt. I switched to running it which i didnt see at first was what you were supposed to do, but since it just stops. I have been having trouble downloading my other programs as well, for example AIM, and Skype. Skype said i needed to make sure i had directx installed, so im downloading that now, havent had a problem yet, but not done. As far as aim, i have completed the download before, but it says it cannot open my buddy list and stuff, like its missing part of the download. Was thinking since all of the programs i've tried to download are having some kind of issue maybe they are related? I'm not sure of anything as i don't have a whole lot of experience with computers, and mainly use them for social purposes. Thanks.

This could be a problem with your current browser, IE or a more general problem.

  • what version of IE are you using and is it fully updated ?
  • what security software is in use ? - is that blocking downloads or installs, it may need to be disabled
  • do you know roughly what download speed (in kbps) you generally get, and is the line dial-up or some faster broadband type
  • it may be worth looking at disk space available, it is normally recommended on a Windows system that say 20-25% is kept as free space, otherwise things may slow down.

■ maybe an easier method would be to install firefox from some other removable media, what does your XP use ? eg USB sticks, CDs

  • it is too big for floppies at about 8MB, but there are ways of doing it at a push

I rarely use IE myself these days, and latest version I have is IE7, so I will have to leave it for others to comment on solving IE problems, or pointing you towards suitable information on that.

I note you say I switched to running it which i didnt see at first was what you were supposed to do, but since it just stops.

Often in a situation where you are trying to install something, it is better where possible to download an installer file and then run it rather than trying to run the install online.

It is possible that your anti-virus software is corrupting the downloaded files or otherwise interfering with downloading files.
You can try to disable the real-time (live) scanning of files in your anti-virus software temporarily to see if that makes downloading work.
