I am winding down a business served by a domain name and would like to have the users advised to use my gmail account. This may take some time to assure that domain address users are forwarded to my gmail account. What do I need to do. I will be terminating my domain name when I am assured my messages will be forwarded to gmail address.

Your best bet is to see if your online account has the ability to forward email. This is best addressed from the server level, not the client level. Keep the old account for a couple of months after the forwarding message is sent.
