Can't send email

With the recent update of Thunderbird to 91.2.0, I can no longer send emails.

I do not have saved passwords in Thunderbird. For all past versions of Thunderbird, I would be prompted for a password on send the first time I sent a message after opening the application.

I am now never prompted for a password and I get the following error message after canceling out of the never-ending "sending" notification: "Sending of the message failed. Unable to authenticate to Outgoing server (SMTP) mail.xxxxxx.com. Please check the password and verify the 'Authentication method' in 'Account Settings | Outgoing server (SMTP)'"

I have tried all of the steps in the Thunderbird online help on this topic, and have checked with my email provider, who states that they have made no changes on their end. I suspect that this is a bug in Thunderbird 91.2.0, where a password is never requested on send.
