When I open T'Bird and look into my .gmail inbox I see a bunch of messages. If I try to access one, all the new messages disappear. They are not in my Trash or Spam, just gone. I have a .hughes.net account which works fine? I tried deleting .Thunderbird folder and re-installing but no luck. If I use another mail server (MailBird) everything works ok, I prefer Thunderbird because it is so easy and user friendly. Please help.

Is this an IMAP or POP mail account? If IMAP: Right click on mail account name in Folder Pane and select 'Subscribe' click on 'Refresh' select folders and clickon 'Subscribe' click on OK

Exit and restart Thunderbird.

Please report back on results.

Try repairing the index. Right click on folder and select 'Properties' click on 'Repair folder' click on OK

Try repairing some profile files. In Thunderbird Help > Troubleshooting Information click on 'Open folder' A new window opens showing contents of your profile name folder.

Exit Thunderbird now.

Delete the following files.

  • foldertree.json
  • mailviews.dat
  • panacea.dat
  • session.dat
  • xulstore.json

Start Thunderbird.

Neither repair folder or deleting mailviews.dat worked. Other files foldertree.json, panacea.dat, session.dat and xulstore.dat were not found.

When a new mail comes into in box, the little notification appears in the lower right of my screen and new mail indicator in my inbox. If I click on the inbox new mail immediately got to trash and new trash mail is indicated. If I click on Trash, it's gone forever. Thanks for trying to help.

I even uninstalled T'Bird, deleted the entire Mozilla Folder and reinstalled. All my old mail was there but so was problem,

re :Other files foldertree.json, panacea.dat, session.dat and xulstore.dat were not found. sorry...my mistake 'session.dat' should be 'session.json'

Perhaps you have some files hidden. Make hidden files and folders visible.

Then use Thunderbird to locate the 'profile name' folder. Help > Troubleshooting Information click on 'Open folder' A new window opens showing contents of your profile name folder.

Exit Thunderbird now.

The image below is an example of 'profile name' contents. I've ordered them by 'Type' mailViews.dat is underlined below it is 'panacea.dat'

lower down in the Type 'json file' section you would find the other three.

Delete the following files.

  • foldertree.json
  • mailviews.dat
  • panacea.dat
  • session.json
  • xulstore.json

Profile name folder location: Windows OS:

  • C:\Users\<Windows user name>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\<Profile name>\

MAC OS:

  • ~/Library/Thunderbird/Profiles/<Profile name>/

The tilde character (~) refers to the current user's Home folder, so ~/Library is the /Macintosh HD/Users/<username>/Library folder.

Linux OS:

  • ~/.thunderbird/<Profile name>/

However, if you're using a third party build from Debian or Ubuntu, those builds store your profile folder here:

  • ~/.mozilla-thunderbird<Profile name>

I was able to find and delete and empty trash bin the files you named. Tried again...no luck. I even sent one to myself. It reported that it was sent. Not in Inbox folder, indication that a new message was in Trash folder but it immediately disappeared when I tried to open Trash. Also not in Sent Folder. Looks like Thunderbird automatically deletes anything "new" into any of the folders. arrrrgh Thank you for helping. Attached is my Tbird folder list

Are those 'deleted' emails still listed in the 'All Mail' folder ?

Is the new email you sent located in the 'Follow-up' or 'Important' folder?

I'm wondering if you have a setting in the webmail account which auto archives or moves read emails to a different category . In webmail account, Settings, Inbox What is set for Inbox type: Is it 'Default' or 'Priority Inbox' etc? Under 'Categories': Do you only have 'Primary' selected ?

Gmail does not allow you to have imap access to other Categories, so I was wondering if emails were auto moved to another category and therefore invisible in thunderbird.
