i want to forward a msg, but contact list at left screen does not appear to click to add contacts.
I used to point and click to add a contact to the forward message. Now have to type in. When I click "contacts" original message disappears. Why did this change If a upgrade, its a bad one. How can I change back. Upgrades should be approved, or confirmed by user. Reply soon. Thanks

Sounds like you have a broken addon.
Does the problem reproduce after doing help > restart with addons disabled??

Pressing f9 toggles the contact sidebar on and off. Thunderbird has worked like this for as long as I remember. You do have to be in a Write window when pressing F9.
There are options on what to do with updates. Maybe you should select the one that suits your wants. Options-Advanced-Update
The right window/column does not exist. so how do I press F9 on it? Why did the right column go away when it used to be there automatically when I clicked forward?
The right window/contact list does not exist as it did before, so how do I press f9 while there? Why did the contact not be there when I click forward? It used to be there automatically? Thanks, Please reply and tell me how I can go back to previous version.
I said have the Write window open when pressing F9. Obviously the Contact Sidebar does not have to be showing to press F9 to "turn it back on". If the Contact Sidebar was showing would be already on and you would not be asking the question or need to press F9. You could always explore the Menu system under View and check the box to turn on the Contact Sidebar.
You do not need to go back a version. Just follow simple instructions.
Why did it go away? I do not know. I was not there.
You are wrong. In write mode, f9 does not turn on contact list. In write mode, view path does not show Check In write mode, the path is: view then Contacts f9.
Figured it out myself. Not bad for a 73 yr old, Viet Nam vet
Not wrong on my system and since you are using Windows it should not be wrong on yours. You must be special.

Seriously. I think he was particularly patient. Perhaps you should have just pressed the F9 key when in a compose window like he said to do.
In my profession, I dealt with public relations. I could give you a lesson. Remember, I am the customer. First off my system is not the same version as your in the display you gave. It does not follow that path. It takes the simple path I told you, not the direction you just, and previously stated. You are the professional here and should have recognized your and my version are not the same. It's negligent miscommunication like this is what causes many young soldiers to loose there lives. Like in Viet Nam. Wake up and get out of your perfect world. Who is our boss. I want to speak with that person. game on, I will be presenting this to your top management, until I get results. I'll be starting with the Web Site, and referencing the posted times and dates. Don't bother to reply. I would just delete it. If you were smart you would get your management to contact me, before I put this out on the media.
This is the real world. Being a customer indicates you purchased a product or service. Since Thunderbird is free you have done neither. Mozilla dumped Thunderbird years back and a volunteer group called the Thunderbird Council took over to keep it going. This support forum is staffed by Thunderbird users that volunteer their time to help no matter how ungrateful the person asking the question is. Good luck in your search for my boss.

Nevermind, I see you figured it out.
It works same on my system - open compose, hit F9 or View > Contact Sidebar. Same on every OS, and every version of Thunderbird.
If it doesn't stick then something else is wrong.
Probably another happy CCleaner customer. They have been merrily deleting setting files in Thunderbird for years.
