How do I change the install of Thunderbird (v. 63.0.3) from IMAP to POP?

None of versions 60.3.0, 60.3.2, or 63.0.3 (tried v. 63 because my ISP Inbox is full, and I thought the beta might give extra install options) installed as POP3; they all defaulted to IMAP. I can view email in IMAP, but can't download it to my computer. I can use IMAP If I can actually download the emails, not just view them. I haven't found a way to do that. (Also POP3 is preferable on my ISP, since email downloads much more quickly.)

There is a help article to change install to POP (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/faq-changing-imap-pop), but that seems to be for a previous version(s) of TB. There is no longer an Account Settings option under the Tools menu; it simply goes to a new tab and that page contains nothing I could find about account settings, or changing (installing) TB as POP3.

Thanks for your assistance!

To go to account settings: At the top right of the Thunderbird window, click the menu button > Options > Account Settings

Thanks for the further info; I had missed that part of the menu. There is no Account Settings option I could see under Options. (I looked through all the higher level as well as lower level menus under Options.)

Another possible solution: is there a direct way to edit something like an .ini file to change the method of download from IMAP to POP? TB has to know which method to use, what I would be doing if I could get to the Account Settings you mentioned.

Hi christ1,

Sorry for the delay in responding; the power supply on my desktop went out, and when I downloaded TB to my laptop, I wound up with the same IMAP vs POP problem. I did find [Menu icon ] > Options > Account Settings > Server Settings with Server Type: IMAP Mail Server.

Under Account Settings > Account Actions ( bottom of the menu), it appears that I might be able to change to POP3 on another account I have at the same ISP. Could you step me through that? Also, is there a way to change the existing primary account from IMAP to POP without losing the email in that Inbox?

If that isn't possible, how do I download what's in the ISP's Inbox to my Inbox, so I can free up space on the ISP's Mailbox? Thanks again!

No, you cannot change an existing account.
