The infamous Yahoo switcheroo
Just wanted to let you know that b/c nothing I tried to stop the search engine defaulting back to Yahoo worked, I deleted Firefox and am using Chrome instead.
I literally tried all the suggestions- nothing worked. And I finally decided- why am I spending time doing this?! Just kill Firefox, get Chrome. Especially now that Chrome has Sidewise- which is your Treetabs- the only reason I preferred firefox.

I had no issue with the search engine being defaulted to Google.
Type about:addons<enter> in the address bar to open your Add-ons Manager. Hot key; (<Control> [Mac=<Command>] <Shift> A)
In the Add-ons Manager, on the left, select Extensions. Remove “ Yahoo “ Anything.
Also remove SafeSearch, SearchAssist Incognito, FileConverter Addon, SearchLock, DiscreteSearch, WebSearch, Findwide Search Engine
Now do the same in the computer’s Programs Folder.
Windows: Start > Control Panel > Uninstall Programs. Mac: Open the Applications folder. Linux: Check your user manual.
Lucky you! Not really relevant to my case, though.

Lucky or not it - it does make relevance to the case. I never had to change my default from Google even when I installed Addons in FF60.0.2. This would mean a user installed software made the change unbeknown to the installer and that is what is causing the change. Because if FF didn't change it then something else did it and locked the change in.

HI since you have deleted Firefox please Mark you statement as the solution
It’s very sad, but many software downloaders/ installers will trick you into installing not only their program, but other programs as well.
You have heard of the fine print in shady contracts, right? Well, some installers you need to look at the itsy bitsy teeny weeny fine print.
You are thinking you are giving the installer permission to install the program you want by using the recommended option. But if you use the Manual Option Instead, you discover all kinds of stuff that you do not even know what it is or what it does.
From now on, everyone needs to Use The Manual Option to put a stop to this.
Note that these programs can also change browser/computer settings.
