Every time I start firefox it tell me that the bookmarks file won't work since a file for firefox is being used by another program. Followed the instructions to fix the problem and that doesn't work. Have reinstalled the program more then once and that didn't help either. What else can do done.

Have you rebooted since the update ?

Can you open it to Show all Bookmarks ? Then Export as HTML

So you want to keep Firefox closed https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-firefox-stores-user-data follow the %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ and save a copy to usb or Desktop.

Uninstall Firefox, then this way. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files(x86) Then restart system. Then run Windows Disk Cleanup. Then run it again and click the button that says Cleanup System Files. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved.

Reinstall with Current Release Firefox 57.0 with a Full Version Installer https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ Note : Legacy Extensions will be disabled and or removed.
