New mail noise and account turning blue when there is no email in the inbox

Hi,

Thunderbird has recently been updated. Since the update it has been behaving strangely.

I have an account which receives messages (briefly) - I created a filter to move all messages to the inbox of another account before any junk filters are run. This works, the messages move and the other account properly filters any junk.

The irritating thing is that I get a sound every time an email passes through the account (even when it is immediately classified as junk by the other account) and the account header turns blue even though the message has been moved elsewhere.

The sound I get is not the same as the new mail sound. It is more of a thud than a chime. I get the new mail sound (the chime) in the other account if the message is not junk. The new mail sound seems to override the other one. So, non- junk mail behaves as required excepting that the empty account turns blue. Junk mail turns the account blue as well as letting off an unnecessary noise.

Another thing that has occurred since the upgrade - pressing the enter key in the body text now creates a double line break instead of a single one.

Thanks for any help, Simon.

re :Another thing that has occurred since the upgrade - pressing the enter key in the body text now creates a double line break instead of a single one.

This is not a bug and is intentional. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/new-thunderbird-45

This has just been introduced in an attempt to keep in line with how eg: research documents are produced and how type is displayed in web pages.

Currently, 'Paragraph' is now set as default and when you press 'Enter' it means 'double space' new line with no indentation.

quote from the link mentioned above: The Thunderbird composition window now functions more like a word processor in that pressing the "Enter" key inserts a new paragraph, pressing "Shift+Enter" inserts a new line. This new behavior can be switched off in the Tools > Options > Composition > General tab.

To change this to auto select as default 'Body Text' and 'Enter' means a go to next line: Either Via 'Menu Bar'

  • 'Tools' > 'Options' > 'Composition' > 'General' tab

OR via 'Mail Toolbar'

  • 'Menu icon' > 'Options' > 'Options' > 'Composition' > 'General' tab
  • uncheck 'when using paragraph format, the enter key creates a new paragraph.'
  • click on OK

Excellent Toad Hall, that's one minor irritation nicely cleared up, thank you. I hope someone can help me with the first part.

re: new sound / account turns blue What OS are you using? What addon extensions are you using?

Does this occur if you run Thunderbird in Safe Mode? 'Help' > 'Restart with addons disabled'

OSX - latest version No add ons or extensions activated I have it on safe mode now - I will give it an hour so to see what happens.

I didn't have to wait an hour - it happened again just now even in safe mode.

It may be relevent that the account which appears to be making a noise and is definately the one going blue has a filter set to move all incoming mail to another account.
