I have Thunderbird stored on a backup "D:" drive. Cannot figure out how to transfer old e-mails from where they are stored there to C: drive, after they were lost on C: drive. Thunderbird Profile is "read only" and won't allow me to change that to overwrite with previous e-mails.

then I suggest you make sure Thunderbird is closed and make whatever changes you need to to your machine to make the location read write. That is it read only is not anything to do with Thunderbird.
