Firefox will not create Json or html file of my bookmarks...help?

more options

Hello!

I am having difficulty saving my bookmarks as an html file and I also am having problems backing up my bookmarks as a json file. I tried getting help in 2014 but could never solve the problem. Now that I want to change my version of windows I would love to be able to keep all my bookmarks...it's kind of like my own library of links rather than a library of books.

For a while I was able to copy a few files (see image attached) and restore my bookmarks. I did this when formatting my computer as well as getting my library to my laptop.

Right now a html file is not created when I try to "Export bookmarks to HTML." And when I try to "Backup" no json file is created.

I was told in 2014 from the mozilla support community to try to use FEBE. This didn't work. Also no files were created when backing up.

Does anyone have a solution?

Thanks so much for reading this!

Hope you all have a happy and healthy new year.

Cheers, Kevin

Some file browsers hide the extensions of some file types. Do a right click on those files, and select Properties.

These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backups of files that you choose.

Hello FredMcD,

Sorry, I am a little confused.

Which files do you want me to right click properties? If the html or json files are not created how can I right click them?

I've tried FEBE, it didn't work. FEBE did not create backups. Not sure if OPIE will help.

Thanks so much man! Cheers, Kevin

In your screen shot above. The first entry; Bookmarks. Look to it's right. The file is listed as an HTML file. Now look at Sessionstore on the bottom. It is listed as a script file.

There is an option to hide the extensions of known file types. That is why you see no extension there.

Hello FredMcD,

Thanks for your help thus far.

Sorry for the confusion. The attached image is a cropped screen shot of a back I did a while ago. I manually copy and pasted a few files (to save bookmarks). But some of the files are now not created when I try to back up as html or json file.

The screen shot is to just show you how I backed up in the past.

Thanks again for your help!

Cheers, Kevin

How many bookmarks do you have?

Are there compressed .jsonlz4 backups in the bookmarkbackups folder?

The name of a JSON bookmarks backup file includes a total item count (folders and separators included) and an hash value to prevent saving the same backup more than once.

  • bookmarks-YYYY-MM-DD_<item count>_<hash>.jsonlz4.

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks, history) in the Firefox profile folder.

See also:

If the Places Maintenance extension can't repair the places.sqlite database then remove all places.sqlite file(s) in the Firefox profile folder to make Firefox rebuild the places.sqlite database from the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

Keep a backup copy of places.sqlite in case a new places.sqlite needs to be created, but no suitable JSON backups are available to rebuild the bookmarks or if you need to keep the history.

Hello Co-rel,

Thanks for your help!

The last bookmark backup json file I have was from 2014-10-17. The size is around 37,342 KB at 88925 file size (if I'm understanding you correctly). All the backups are json files except for three files that are 1KB in size and have the .jsonlz4 extension.

I will try the Places Maintenance addon. Should I back up any files? Which ones need to be?

If that fails I'll try the deletion of the of places.sqlite files.

Thanks so much! Cheers, Kevin
