I have ~3,000 unread messages; can they be deleted; and would this enable my Thunderbird e-mails to be faster?

In addition to being slow, Thunderbird does not allow me to down load a simple pdf file? Thunderbird is almost too protective by not allowing descriptive literature to accompany legitimate e-mails.

Thunderbird does not block PDF files, or any type of attachment. So you will have to elludicate on that topic. I really have no idea what your problem is, unless your anti virus is blocking the attachments. OR they are being sent by a poorly configured Outlook mail client and are arriving as winmail.dat file. But with Zero information it is hard to even guess.

Slow. What anti virus do you use? How fast is your computer. Anything running XP must be getting fairly old and by definition slow.
