Why does 38.1.0 try to install when its folder pane headers are blank? Folder pane column headings are not displayed
Right after installing 38.0.1 or 38.1.0, the folder pane doesn't display the column headers and only the name column is visible. Clicking on the header a drop-down appears and it's also blank, but does have 3 hidden check boxes. If those three boxes are checked, the unread, total, and size columns show up but still without heading text. What's the fix? I'll not upgrade to 38+ until I see that this is solved.

Try disabling hardware acceleration. Tools|Options|Advanced|General
It is probably caused by what Zenos wrote or an add-on. If the acceleration setting does not help, please start * Thunderbird in safe mode - http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/safe-mode
Does problem go away? Please reply to let us know results.
Reinstalling 38.1.0 and running in safe mode (hold shift while starting) resulting in something about extra columns extension not compatible and furthermore the entire heading in the folders pane is now absent. Back to 31.4 version where the folder pane has a heading and also displays columns (unread, total, and size) along with the headings.
I think all of this is solvable by removing the extra folder columns addon
Disabling 'extra folders columns' doesn't make any difference - it's incompatible with 38.1 and is disabled anyway.
If Folder pane column headings are not displayed, then two likely causes may be theme, or hardware acceleration, which can be disabled at tools | options | advanced | general
