How Can I Sync Bookmarks Between Different Browsers?

If I'm going to try Firefox Quantum, I'm going to need to be able to sync bookmarks between Firefox, Waterfox, and possibly also Safari-- though I mainly avoid Safari due to migraines.

What is a good way to do that?

I think there's an iCloud tool for MacOS, and several independent apps for other platforms, though I don't know how reliable or buggy they are.

I assume I would want to clear out bookmarks from some of these apps, to avoid duplication.

Each browser has a facility for importing Bookmarks and other Settings from alternative browsers. Maybe you need to establish which one is the cleanest list and import that into the others.

In Firefox Quantum click Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import and Backup > Import Data from Another Browser > ..............

Here is an example of what you can do with bookmarks.

In the Bookmarks Manager of each system, create a new folder in the root directory. Give it a name like; Work, Waterfox, and whatever types of bookmarks you have.

Now when you sync, the separate systems should show up in different folders.

BookmarkManager \Waterfox \Work \Crome

And so on.

If I'm trying to use two browsers, I'll need to sync bookmarks between them. Not just import from one to the others.

When you use sync, whatever is on one system is sent to the others. And if you make a change on one system, the others are also changed.

I don't think any browser has a built-in way to do this - for example, Firefox Sync will only work with Firefox and won't sync with other browsers.

Like you mentioned, there are third-party programs available that do this. One pretty popular one is XMarks: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/xmarks-sync/ , which claims to support Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, and Chrome. It likely works in Waterfox as well, since Waterfox is based on an older version of Firefox. I haven't personally used this, so I can't vouch for how reliable it is, but that looks like your best option.

I'm looking for something that does that, at least between Firefox and Waterfox on my Mac.

I don't know what Firefox Sync is, but I don't think it will do that between Firefox and Waterfox let alone Safari.

I think XMarks may be my best option, but I don't know for sure.

Hi MarjaE,

It sounds like Xmarks is your best bet for syncing between browsers. Firefox Sync is exclusive to Firefox. It is a feature of Firefox that gives you an account that mirrors each profiles of the Firefox devices that are connected to the account. It is not a back up option, but it does sync all of the profile features in Firefox, including passwords, bookmarks, history etc.

Thanks Fred and Tony and user!
