Everything is whited out on menu bar (no icons are visible), there is no Red X, or back arrow visible. The X is very faint and blue when I place the cursor over the spot where it is located. I can get out by placing the cursor where the arrow or back button should be and clicking, but nothing is visible. Everything shows when I use Explorer. I am using Windows 8.1.

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

You need to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting.

Can you attach a screenshot?

  • Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot
  • Make sure that you do not exceed the maximum size of 1 MB

You can try to disable OMTC and leave hardware acceleration in Firefox enabled.

  • about:config page: layers.offmainthreadcomposition.enabled = false

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

Did you try to disable OMTC (OffMainThreadCompositing)?

You can use one of these to start Firefox in Safe Mode:

  • On Windows, hold down the Shift key while starting Firefox with a double-click on the Firefox desktop shortcut
  • On Mac, hold down the Options key while starting Firefox
  • Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

Yes, I disabled "Use hardware acceleration when available", rebooted without any change.
