Have a new computer and set up Thunderbird 78 on it. Old computer had v78 and at top of folder pane had a row with "Name", "Unread", "Totals" displayed (option to show "Size" turned off). This allowed number of messages in each folder to be shown against the folder name. On new computer have enabled the Folder Pane but cannot get the row that allows display of (folder) name, unread, totals and size. Tried searching through options and also seeing what left clicks or right clicks might offer but no luck. (Note have another computer running v78 which has folder pane top row working; perhaps upgrading from earlier versions preserved this feature.) I have not yet looked in the prefs.js file but hope someone can give me a helpful answer before I do that.

I had the same problem. Couldn't see the number of messages in each folder, yet View\Layout\Folder Pane Columns WAS selected! Solution: the 'number of messages column' somehow got compressed to the point where no numbers were visible and I could hardly even tell the column was there! So I grabbed the column marker and slid it to the left and voilá—all the numbers reappeared. It was just a column sizing issue. Hope this helps somebody else.

On the latest versions of TB, folder pane layout has been moved to Customize/layouts. Why TB moves things like this around every year or two is a mystery.
