I lost all my tab groups. I did a synchronisation some times before, several times. I want to get back my tab group configuration from a date which isn't older than the last synchronisation date. Is there a chance and how I can manage it in the future. I want to make several "backups" an to decide later what I want to restore. The next topic is only for the future, how to manage diferrent tab groups, e.g. one bigger one for the PC and one smaller one for the smart phone (which may a subset of the bigger one).

I have just confirmed that tab groups are kept in the session store file. So since you have "Show windows and tabs from last time" these should be saved whether or not it is connected to sync.

However from one device to the next it does not look like the session syncs across desktop devices.

Any add on used to back up or store these sessions will only be native the the computer. I will try session manager. The add on did sync, but the local session save files did not. The session saved only and was only available on one computer. So there is room for improvement. These sessions could be saved to a dropbox or box or like shared space and loaded I believe, though that would take some manual work.

Sync only saves the most recent data, including "sessions" and there are limitations to that session data [as mentioned]. And the data which is sync'd to a mobile device is limited based upon the type of data. Exactly what and how much I have no idea, as I don't have any mobile devices.

No older files or data "points" are retained. And considering Sync runs automatically, unless you turned off the pref for "autoconnect" Sync was working every time you opened Firefox, added any data like a bookmark, and everytime you closed Firefox.

If you want more than the most recent saved, look into the Session Manager extension, as guigs2 mentioned. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/session-manager/
