pdf.js eats a lot of memory
I have five pdf files open in my browser each being size of ~ 1 MB => 5 MB. (Looked up by downloading them) Yet, pdf.js uses combined 457 MB of RAM (162 + 132 + 70 + 56 + 23 MB) to display these documents. Needless to say, a 100 MB or so pdf opened with pdf.js stalls the whole browser completely. I find the massive 100 times the pdf size use of memory weird. Leak somewhere or what?

It looks like there are existing bugs for this issue: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=881974 and https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=868949. So there are developers working on the issue.
As a workaround, if you need to, you could try using another viewer:
