I normally just use a single firefox window but occassionally when I have multiple monitors I turn one tab (usually youtube) into a new window and put it on my second monitor. The problem is I want all new links to continue open on my original/main window but firefox keeps opening them in the new window. Is there a way to change this behaviour?

External links open in the most recently used window for me on Linux.

Does it still happen in a new profile? An easy way to test a new profile is to install Developer Edition and see if it happens there or refresh your existing profile.

I tried in a new profile and it's the same behaviour.

I think you're right about "most recently used" window but that only works as long as that window is visible. If I click on external link from a different space (which means my main firefox window is not visible) it opens the link the secondary firefox window.

It still works for me on Ubuntu if the MRU window is in a different workspace that is not visible. You need to be careful when switching workspaces to not activate a different Firefox window.

I haven't tested it on my Linux machines but it definitely doesn't work on macOS. I'm not activating a different Firefox window as I switch spaces.
