How can I insert symbols/wingdings in the body of a Thunderbird email I'm sending?

Yes, this question includes the solution as well. The dropdown list of smileys in the composition window is very limited. I wanted to insert a simple heart symbol in the text of an (HTML) email I was writing to send to my girlfriend, but was unable to do this. So instead, I created a small (12 X 11 pixels) .jpg file of a red heart symbol (which I have attached to this email) and inserted that inline where I wanted it. End of problem.

The Emoji add-on is an option if you're not on W10+ (see picture).

Nice extension, but my method allows a person to use any small image they like.
