Type about:addons<enter> in the address bar to open your Add-ons Manager. Hot key; (<Control> [Mac=<Command>] <Shift> A)

In the Add-ons Manager, on the left, select Extensions. Remove “ Yahoo “ Anything.

Also remove SafeSearch, SearchAssist Incognito, FileConverter Addon, SearchLock, DiscreteSearch, WebSearch, Findwide Search Engine, securedsearch

Now do the same in the computer’s Programs Folder.

Windows: Start > Control Panel > Uninstall Programs. Mac: Open the Applications folder. Linux: Check your user manual.

If you go into settings. There is a section called "Default Search Engine". Just change this to Google and you should be good to go!

Hi stu.ducklow, in case an "affiliate" is responsible rather than Yahoo itself, could you share the URL of an example results page? It might contain parameters that point toward a particular culprit. (You can copy/paste it from the address bar into a reply.)

More specifically, find your way to this folder:

/Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/Resources/defaults/pref

A file named channel-prefs.js is normal here. Any other file in this folder is suspicious if you do not remember creating it yourself. Remove any such files to a neutral location for further analysis at your leisure.

I've done all the above. I'm using a Mac, so Fred McD's instruction to "do the same thing in the programs folder" would have me looking through the Applications folder. I couldn't see any of the names he mentioned.

I even reset firefox a few weeks ago and it's still happening!

The fact that resetting the browser didn't fix the problem makes jscher2000's suggestion that this could be malware more likely. Please check a few things:

1. Do you have this or a similar problem in Safari also? Most of the Yahoo redirect malware for Mac I can find documented online messes up Safari also.
2. Can you search in Google manually by going to the site, or clicking https://www.google.com/search?q=test in Firefox? or does this redirect to Yahoo?
3. As jscher2000 asked, what is the URL that appears after searching? What files are there at /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/Resources/defaults/pref (you can press Shift+Cmd+G in Finder and paste this path in)

Here's what happens:

I type "New Hampshire" into my address bar in Firefox and get results from Yahoo.

Same thing with Google Chrome. Takes me to Yahoo results.

Safari works. Same search brings up Google results.

My Firefox prefs show Google as my preferred browser

Checked /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/Resources/defaults/pref and removed one JS file which I don't remember the name of. Made no changes in search results.

I have only one add-on, Last Pass, a password utililty I don't want to stop using.

I have two plugins, Open H264 and Widevine Content Decryption, both installed by Firefox.

Looks like I'm going to have to start using Safari.

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.

When you type in your query, does Firefox show:

New Hampshire — Search with Google

If No, it shows some other search engine's name:

You'll need to reset your default search engine again, and remove any unwanted intruder through the One-click Search Engines box. See: Change your default search settings in Firefox.

If Yes, it shows Search with Google:

Some kind of external diversion could be happening if it's not caused by an add-on. Rather suspicious that Chrome is also affected!
