cannot reboot and I get this message The application “Firefox.app” is not open anymore.
Firefox has not allowed my computer to shut down normally for months.
I created a whole new user with a new Firefox profile, but when I quit Firefox or try to do a shutdown, Firefox closes it's windows but leaves the small dot under it's icon on the doc. Force quitting does nothing. If I click on the icon I get nothing if I go to the application folder and double click on Firefox, I get this: The application “Firefox.app” is not open anymore.
I'm using Chrome because the only way to run firefox (without a forced shutdown) is to copy the Firefox app to another name and run that. BTW, I've also deleted all the parentlock files from my system (several times). If this cannot be solved I'll have to switch to Chrome (as much as I hate Google)! Versions: Firefox 37.0.2 OS/X: 10.10.2 (14C1514)

There must be a plugin at fault. That is really the only thing that can cause problems across multiple user profiles.

Hmmm, there are quite a few potential culprits here.
- Enter about:crashes in the Firefox address bar and press Enter. A Submitted Crash Reports list will appear, similar to the one shown below.
- Copy the 5 most recent Report IDs that start with bp- and then go back to your forum question and paste those IDs into the "Post a Reply" box.
Note: If a recent Report ID does not start with bp- click on it to submit the report.
(Please don't take a screenshot of your crashes, just copy and paste the IDs. The below image is just an example of what your Firefox screen should look like.)
More information and further troubleshooting steps can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox crashes (closing or quitting unexpectedly) article.
BTW, the file: org.mozilla.firefox.plist was showing as an open file in the lsof command even though Firefox was not running. I did manage to kill this file but it took a little doing...

Sometimes crashes can be caused by a corrupt org.mozilla.firefox.plist. If you remove or rename that file Firefox will produce a new one on its next startup.
Can you try this and see if it resolves your issue?
By the way, those crashes appear to be too old for me to look up. Crash data is typically discarded after 2 weeks. Do you have any more recent crash reports?

I have deleted the plist file. And Firefox seems to be working OK for now. But, I have done this before, even resorting to deleting and re-installing Firefox, and creating a new Mac user. However, after a few days or so, when i need to restart the Mac for an upgrade or whatever, it's always Firefox that does not completely shut down. It just sits on the doc with a Dot under it and the system just waits. If I try to re-run Firefox I get the weird message: that Firefox is not open anymore. If I copy Firefox.app the copy will run just fine. Eventually I have to do a forced shutdown (not great for the computer). I'm getting tired of this. I've used Firefox for many years, but sadly (on this Mac) I may have to give it up. The Mac at home and my PC here seem to be OK.
If it happens again, open a support ticket here and post the crash ID. If the crash report is less than 2 weeks old we will be able to retrieve the report and possibly determine the root cause of the issue.
