Messages won't download on one email account since 115 update
Hi,
I am a longtime Thunderbird user. I have 3 email accounts that I check via Thunderbird. I am having issues on just one of those accounts since the 115 Supernova update. I see the message "checking inbox for new messages" but they are not downloading. I have ATT email through Yahoo, and I can log into Yahoo Mail (webmail) and see the messages there ... they suddenly are just not downloading to Thunderbird.
I have tried:
compacting folders Thunderbird safe mode Windows safe mode with networking turning my antivirus off temporarily moving all emails in that account Inbox to a backup folder
I'm frustrated and need to download mail - can you please help me?! Thanks!

Requested info above. Additional update:
I randomly tried putting emails on my webmail (Yahoo Mail for ATT) into a backup folder instead of inbox. Then I put just a few of those emails back into the inbox, opened Thunderbird, and they downloaded. I did the same thing, moving small numbers of the emails from the backup folder to inbox on Yahoo Mail, then re-opening Thunderbird, several times. I was able to download mail. But what a pain!! And I don't understand why this happened.
Not that it helps, but I also have this problem now and I use AT&T/Yahoo email. I posted the question earlier. I see there are at least one or two others like us. And it seemed to start with version 115. I thought it was 115.3.0 but I'm not sure. Perhaps this is a combined issue with AT&T and Thunderbird and they are just going to point fingers. Thanks for the tip about moving email to another box and then back.
DPBurris, sorry you are having the same issue. Interesting that there are several of us with AT&T/Yahoo experiencing the same issue. I wonder if there is some setting with 115 that either doesn't work smoothly with AT&T or a security setting called for with 115 that AT&T has not updated yet.

Just curious, but are you all using the same antivirus?
Type: Name
Antivirus: Avast Antivirus
Avast has had a very troubling history since around 2012 with repeated mail failures post mail client update.

Matt, thanks for writing. Is there a free antivirus you recommend instead of Avast?
Is there a free antivirus you recommend instead of Avast?
Microsoft Defender. It ships with Windows 10 & 11, no need for any 3rd -party anti-virus software.
These are some generic suggestions to avoid problems with anti-virus software.
Create an exception in your anti-virus software for the Thunderbird profile folder, so that the anti-virus real-time scanner will not scan it. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data#w_how-to-find-your-profile
Don't let your anti-virus software scan incoming and outgoing messages.
Don't let your anti-virus software scan attachments.
Don't let your anti-virus software intercept your secure connection to the server.
Remove any add-ons your anti-virus software may have installed in Thunderbird.
Keep it working. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Keep_it_working_-_Thunderbird
And last but not least, backup your Thunderbird profile on a regular basis. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data#w_backing-up-a-profile
I am not using any third party anti-virus. Just Windows 10 and Windows defender.
I was able to get Thunderbird 115 to download my AT&T email by completely emptying my AT&T Yahoo Inbox. Now new messages are downloading to Thunderbird. So the problem is mitigated, but there was/is some issue there with the update process at some point. Not sure what that was/is exactly. Thanks for information and help.
Thanks for the replies. I removed Avast and now have Microsoft Defender. I made sure that Thunderbird is listed in the exceptions there.
After I did this I was able to download email - three times. Then it stopped again.
I have not changed any settings or done anything different.
Any ideas or suggestions appreciated!
Your server settings look good. Did you create a secure mail key? https://www.att.com/support/article/email-support/KM1240462
I have this problem too. I am not on AT&T, but my ISP, Frontiernet.net, is a phone company, and I access my webmail through Yahoo. Sometime yesterday evening my email stopped downloading to Thunderbird. I can still access it from the Yahoo site, and I can still send mail from the account in Thunderbird. I checked the password, and it is the same in both places. I tried removing the global indexing file, as instructed from past problems like this one, and I waited for my inbox re-index, but nothing changed.
At the bottom of Thunderbird when I specifically check mail for my frontiernet account, I get a line of text saying it's trying to contact the host. Then after a few attempts, I got a message saying it couldn't send my password. I tried re-entering the password, and now it requires me to enter it every time I open the program or try to get it to download email. Sometimes I get an error back saying it couldn't connect with that password, other times nothing happens except the same contacting host message.
I tried cleaning out my inbox on Yahoo as others here described, but that accomplished nothing. I have my messages in POP, so there aren't many messages saved on the Yahoo server, but I have thousands of messages in Thunderbird. I've used Thunderbird for many years. I tried deleting 2000 messages, but that made no difference. I am out of ideas and very frustrated!
I found another thread with this same, unsolved problem here: https://support.mozilla.org/pt-PT/questions/1172376
And I have another issue that I have opened separately, but I suspect the two might be related. Since the 115 update, Thunderbird has been downloading email (until it stopped downloading email yesterday) and is popping up notifications when the program is closed, which never used to happen. I opened a separate thread about that issue here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1426565, but I wanted to raise it here in case it is related to this email not downloading problem.
Possible solution found... I remembered that Yahoo categorizes some messages as spam, and when it does, Thunderbird will not download them. I tried to get Yahoo to stop doing that and/or Thunderbird to download those messages, since many are not actually spam, but have been unable to figure out a way to do that. So it made me wonder if perhaps the bug is related to that interface. Then I remembered that I routinely tell Yahoo to block addresses that are legitimately spam, and I wondered if that could be involved in the problem too. So I went to my account on Yahoo and deleted all the addresses I had stored as blocked. Then I opened Thunderbird, entered my password yet again, and this time the messages downloaded. Time will tell if this is a permanent solution or just a temporary one, similar to the work around others have found by moving messages in and out of the inbox on Yahoo.
Email failed to download again this morning, so yesterday's success was indeed fleeting, and I am back to square one. I sure hope someone can figure this out. I really don't want to have to change email programs.
Yesterday the email downloaded to Thunderbird 3 times after I again emptied my inbox on Yahoo. Then it stopped again and isn't working this morning, no matter what I do in Yahoo. If I tell Thunderbird to check the frontiernet account for email, I still get sending login information to host message. Sometimes it gives me an error saying it couldn't transmit my password. I have now set up a second email account in Thunderbird, this one from gmail, and that one is working fine. So I can forward messages I want to save from the frontiernet account to gmail and then Thunderbird will download them, and I can file them into my folder structure in Thunderbird. Since I am able to see my frontier mail in Yahoo and in the Mail app on the iPhone and iPad, the problem is clearly an interface problem between Thunderbird and Yahoo servers.
I wanted to reply to several messages here:
Secure mail key - yes, AT&T/Yahoo required OAuth for their products starting a few years ago so I have had OAuth for a while now.
AnMarieJ, we are having such similar issues! I was scanning through messages here last night and noticed there is at least one more post about Frontiernet and several more about AT&T/Yahoo. I agree with you that there is some issue between Yahoo Mail and Thunderbird, and I'm not sure what it is. I have had a similar mail pattern to you. Thursday I got mail more normally on Thunderbird. Friday it was sporadic. Yesterday I was able to download a FEW emails. This morning, nothing. My "best" fix has been setting up a Backup folder at Yahoo Mail and moving new messages there, then sending a few at a time back to the Yahoo Mail inbox so they will go to Thunderbird. This is tedious, even with a normal, not huge amount of email.
More things to note here:
I am getting email at my other Thunderbird accounts just fine. The account with issues is not bigger than the others, does not have more email, no big attachments, etc. I have Yahoo Mail saved as a website on my computer, and use the Yahoo Mail app on my phone and tablet. It works fine there and I can see 100% of my email there. My problem is solely on Thunderbird.
I have even looked at Outlook Mail (Yikes! I don't like their yearly fees). I'm really frustrated and still looking for answers.
Thanks for your message glindathegood. I do not have OAuth, at least not that I know of. I have tried moving messages out of the inbox on Yahoo and then back in, and I think that worked once but didn't work several times. Forwarding messages to my gmail account is working, since Thunderbird will download from there. But it is tedious and frustrating. I don't want to change email addresses, since I've had the frontiernet address for years and have lots of subscriptions through it. I tried forwarding all frontier mail to my gmail address, but as far as I can tell the Yahoo system doesn't allow that unless you upgrade to a paid subscription with Yahoo, and frontiernet doesn't provide any other way to deal with their email except through Yahoo. It's a nightmare.
AnMarieJ, that is a good idea about forwarding emails to another account as needed. It would be nice if we could auto-forward. I never thought of that. I also don't want to leave my AT&T (Bellsouth) email, as I have used the same address since 1998! It is my primary email. I have always used desktop email (the old Windows mail program, and then Thunderbird when it was discontinued). I suppose I could try to get used to Yahoo Mail (webmail) if needed ... but would prefer to have the desktop option.
