Troubleshooting Gmail login issues for Thunderbird for Android and K-9

Gmail login issues are common and can occur for various reasons, such as incorrect credentials, browser problems, or account security measures. This guide provides straightforward solutions to help you resolve these issues quickly and gain access to your account.

If you cannot login to your gmail account using Thunderbird or K-9, please follow the steps in Google's official troubleshooting wizard: Can't sign in to your Google Account.

Working around an "App Blocked" error in K-9

Google is asking K-9 Mail to go through a new verification process and has introduced some additional requirements that were not needed before. We are working hard to meet these requirements, but unfortunately, it is not something we can resolve right away. For those interested, more technical details can be found in issue 8598.

In the meantime, here are some workarounds:

Working around Google Advanced Protection errors like "admin_policy_enforced"

If you see an admin_policy_enforced message, then your administrator has Google Advanced Protection enabled for your Google Workspace. Unfortunately the only workaround at the moment is to ask your administrator to disable Google Advanced Protection by following the steps in Google's documentation: Control which third-party & internal apps access Google Workspace data. Your workspace Administrator may also be able to introduce an exception for Thunderbird for Android.

If you are in control of your workspace, you can temporarily remove yourself from the Google Advanced Protection program, sign in to Thunderbird for Android, and then re-enroll yourself. Note however, when a background authentication needs to be renewed, you may be required to repeat the process.

We are working on becoming part of this program in the future, so this workaround will not be required.

Wrong Google Account

Thunderbird for Android opens the default Android web browser as part of logging you into your Gmail Account.

If you have multiple google accounts, logging into Gmail can fail if you are using the wrong account. As well, sometimes your default web browser might try to log you in with the wrong Google Account when using OAuth. Here are some possible solutions:

Issues with your Android default browser

If you suspect that you have issues with your default browser, try changing it to another browser (see Google's support article: Learn how to change your default browser).
