Thunderbird's automatic email acct setup established my new optimum.net POP3 acct on my desktop Thunderbird application okay, except it does not have a secure connection as my still-in-use Verizon.net acct does (shows the lock icon on the envelop in front of the acct email addr). I need to manually correct the optimum.net setup in order to get that same lock icon on the optimum.net acct. To make that fix, I need to know what the individual setup steps are to set up an optimum.net acct in Thunderbird (I have ver 52.8.0). My present setup has the server settings as incoming = mail.optimum.net at port 110, which I'm told is an old legacy setup that should be avoided. Also, no security settings are in place.

Here is the page with the server settings for your provider. http://optimum.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3614/~/optimum-online:-email-settings---imap-and-smtp Go to Account Settings and edit the settings. Right click the account in the folder pane and select Settings to get to Account Settings.

Those were the settings entries I needed. My optimum.net acct is now properly set up in Thunderbird, and has the lock icon indicating it has a secure connectivity to the optimum server. Thank You.

Follow up. Since I had no issues sending emails from my Optimum.net acct beforehand, I failed to retest that capability after I applied the fix to make the incoming emails secure. I can no longer send emails out unless I remove the SSL/TLS selection on the outgoing server settings, which also means the password is no longer secure. The URL recommended above does not show any SSL/TLS settings for the outgoing server, yet when Thunderbird initially set up the outgoing server for my Optimum email acct, Thunderbird did select the correct port and did set SSL/TLS active in the outgoing server settings. Did Thunderbird select that SSL setting incorrectly?

Ask your provider for their settings. They configure their servers.

For benefit of future Thunderbird users with optimum.net email addresses, the correct port for the outgoing server to use SSL/TLS is 465. Port 587 mentioned in the above Optimum URL is only for an unsecure connection.
