Email links open in new browser/internet page instead new tab on existing browser page. what setting changes this?
I want links in emails to open/add a tab on the existing browser page, instead of opening the link in a new separate browser page. What setting to I change to accomplish this?

That would be controlled by an option in whatever browser you are using. Look through the browser menus and set the option you want. Thunderbird just hands it off to the browser and it is done.

You are talking about a browser issue, so this has nothing to do with Thunderbird, which is an email client. So this question should have asked in the 'Firefox' section, that is assuming you are talking about Firefox browser as you do not mention what browser you use.
However, if you use 'Firefox', then look here: In Firefox browser: 'Tools' > 'Options' > select 'General' under 'Tabs' section there should be the options to open in a new tab and also to switch to it immediately.
