When I shut down the computer with firefox open. The next time I turn it on firefox errors with a note saying 'well this is embarrassing. firefox was unable to open the previous pages....'

I have firefox set to open with a blank page, and set to be my default browser. This issue has begun since the update to the latest firefox.

How can I make firefox simply NOT attempt to open any previous pages on start-up, or on computer turn-off/turn-on ?

The best solution is to not turn the computer off with Firefox running. Firefox is designed to shutdown in an orderly manner and so you should shutdown Firefox using

Menu {3-bar icon) -> Quit {standby icon)

Give Firefox time to closedown properly, before trying to closedown Windows; and only then power off the computer (Windows will normally power down the computer for you).

(There are settings that can prevent the error page displaying but that is probably not necessary here) You can choose to start Firefox from previous pages or from a homepage. That includes setting a blank page as one of the home page, as you have already done.
