When Firefox loads a web site such as TicTok.com, the site instantly plays the very first video that loads. Now this sure sounds like there would be a very simple solution for this problem and the solution should be built right into Firefox's settings... right? Let's see here...

Settings\Privacy & Security\Permissions\Autoplay {pop-up window} Default for all sites: [Allow Audio and Video]

                                   Block Audio
                                   Block Audio and Video

Website Listbox: Status: about:welcome^privateBrowsingId=1 [Allow Audio and Video] about:welcome [Allow Audio and Video]

*the two dropdownboxes in this list have the same options as the 'all sites' dropdownbox.

So with these settings I certainly can block every website from autoplaying any audio or I can block every website from autoplaying any audio AND video. However these settings do not provide a "Block Video" only option. Why would anyone want that? Well because of the way sites like TicTok actually behave when Block Audio and Video is set. When Block Audio and Video is set, the user will have to press play on the video AND then press unmute. The user should be able to prevent the video playback when the website loads, and when the user presses play the audio should just start working without need for pressing unmute. This however, is only annoyance issue.

There is a real functionality issue as well. When looking at the Website Listbox, this component is essentially useless. The developers didn't even need to include the two "about:welcome" entries. They won't ever do anything unless Mozilla decides to add Audio/video to their welcome page (probably not happening). So the user can safely delete those two entries, but here is where it gets interesting. Once deleted, the user can not put them back. In fact, the user cannot enter ANYTHING into this listbox (why?). The only thing we can do is Remove All Websites.

What does this mean for the user? It means that I am relegated to either simply dealing with obnoxious websites and their autoplayed videos. Or I can set it so every website is blocked from autoplaying Audio and Video, but if I do that then I will have to unmute videos before clicking play. The presence of the Website Listbox sure does suggest that the user should be able to add websites, thereby creating a customized list of sites which should or shouldn't have autoplay permissions. To be quite honest, this part of Firefox seems incomplete and I hope it will see some attention soon.

Firefox version 132.0.1 Thunderbird version 128.4.0esr O/S: PCLinuxOS Debian Edition (Debian 12 Bookworm) with KDE 5

I am getting a "Click" sound effect when I click Menu Bar items in both Firefox and Thunderbird, Bookmarks in Firefox, Folders in Thunderbird and some other items in both. I can not find a way to turn it off. It does not happen in any other applications, including other web browsers that are forked from Firefox, so I think it is a Mozilla problem.

This is a relatively new installation that was set up copying settings from Firefox on Windows 10 using Firefox Sync. I did not copy anything from Windows Thunderbird because my email is IMAP which brings in everything from the server. I am not getting this clicking sound in Windows Firefox and Thunderbird.

I am GUESSING that the sound effect is due to an Accessibility setting that is buried somewhere, maybe in one of the text-based "about...." configuration files, but I don't know where to look. I have gone through the Linux KDE System Settings and the Settings in Firefox and Thunderbird several times trying to find it. I will note that I set up Firefox and Thunderbird in the same Linux distro on a laptop also using Firefox Sync and do not have this problem with the laptop. Can anyone tell me where to look to get rid of this irritating noise?

Thank You!

Hello. If I press ctrl+D while on an already bookmarked site then the "Edit bookmark" dialogue box appears.

The issue is that pressing Escape to cancel the Edit dialogue box will save any changes made, rather than simply cancelling and discarding any changes.

For example, changing the bookmark's title to "Apricots" then pressing Escape should see the Edit dialogue box be dismissed with no changes made to the bookmark. However instead the bookmark will now have the title "Apricots", as if I had pressed Enter or clicked Save instead.

There also does not seem to be any other way to simply cancel out of the Edit dialogue box? Pressing alt+F4, ctrl+F4 or clicking outside of the dialogue box will also not cancel the edit, but will instead save changes to the bookmark.

I have tested in a new profile but the issue persists.

Does anyone know how to make pressing the Escape key in an Edit bookmark dialogue box behave like a Cancel rather than a Save?

(Fortunately, this is not an issue with the Add bookmark dialogue box for new bookmarks. There, pressing Escape cancels out of the dialogue box without making any changes or saving anything.)

Hello,

For years I've been able to watch a video in one tab and open a new tab. I could hear the video playing while I opened a new tab. Suddenly today the video pauses as soon as I click away to a NEW tab.

Oddly enough, if I have any other tabs already opened, when I first click on one of those, I can then open a new tab without the video pausing. It's only if I go directly from a YouTube video (that's already playing) that it pauses when trying to open a new tab. Odd.

Why is this happening? and so suddenly? At least I have a work around but this is so weird.

Any ideas out there?

Thanks, Andre'a

BTW - Is "Settings" the best topic? or should I've chosen something else (like Performance)?

I have a Google docs on my google account that I access 5-10 times per day. For many years, when I typed the first four characters of the document name Firefox would suggest the document via its autocomplete feature so all I had to do open to the document was press Enter. I learned it via muscle memory. Over the years it saved me a ton of time.

Then about 9 months ago I signed up for insurance from a company whose name starts with the same four characters. Firefox immediately started suggesting the insurance website instead of my document. I don't know why Firefox thinks I'd rather go to this insurance website. My document is bookmarked but the insurance website is not. I visit my document 100X as often as I visit the insurance website.

I've tried to find settings that will bring my document back to the top of the list. The most useful setting I was found was disabling "Browsing History" under "Address Bar - Firefox Suggest". This removed the insurance website from my suggestions, but it did not bring my document back to the top. I found a help document that says that I should be able to remove the insurance website specifically from "Firefox Suggest" by clicking the three dots next to the name in my drop down address bar and select "remove", but for some reason the insurance website doesn't have the three dots next to it (other suggestions listed in the drop down address bar do have the three dots, so I think I'm looking in the right place). I doubt this would help anyway since I have already removed the insurance website from my suggestions and my document still hasn't been restored as the default.

Is there anyway to access more specific settings that would restore Firefox's original behavior?

Hi All,

Been trying to find a solution for over 2 days now! Please help me!

Firefox 128.4.0esr

I want to hide the following, because I need the screen space: 1/ Tabstoolbar = NOK 2/ Autohide main toolbars = OK 3/ Bring back the old status bar = OK

The last 2 are OK, but the first one doesn't seem to work? I think that there's something in the first script that prevents this from working, coz I have tried everything. Please help it's driving me nuts, never use tabs only windows, because on macOS that's better.

Here's what I have so far, all this is working just fine.

The very last line is disabled because this does what I want but it breaks the "auto hide" main toolbars.

MANY THANKS FOR YOU TIME AND HELP!!!!

On one website, that of the New York Times https://www.nytimes.com, and only on Firefox (I also use Chrome & Edge, and I experience none of the following problems while using either browser), I am unable to open any hyperlinks or tabs or anything at all to maneuver through the NYT website, or domain, I should say (it's not just the homepage; it's all sites that begin with the nytimes.com URL, including all NYT thematic & geographic hubs, all articles and even the My Account/Profile page). When I hover over any link, nothing happens, the appearance of the mouse does not change as it normally does when hovering over a link. When I place the mouse amidst the text of an article, again, the appearance of the mouse does not change to the usual flashing "|" symbol. I can't even highlight text. In short, it's as if the NYTimes domain DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THE PRESENCE OF MY MOUSE ON THE SCREEN AT ALL, as if it's not even there. A few more observations that may be helpful (in order of what I think is increasing importance, but I'm no expert): -- This was a very sudden change that occurred about 10 days ago. I was only using Firefox at the time, had 2 windows open, each with 25+ tabs. In one window, I had 3 NYT articles open in separate tabs, and earlier that day, while reading one of them, everything was normal/this problem had yet to present itself. Later that day, I returned to the computer, saved the 1st of the 3 articles I had read earlier in my Favorites (I meticulously save online content, articles, etc. in hundreds of folders, sub-folders, sub-sub-folders, and so on in my Favorites). I then closed that tab, and turned to the 2nd of the 3 NYT articles I had originally opened in separate tabs in the same window. Soon after starting to read this article, I hovered over a hyperlink embedded in the article, just to see what the source of that info was, but oddly my mouse did not change its appearance as it does when hovering over any type of link. I ignored it at first, but then, a minute later, I came upon a hyperlink I knew I didn't just want to hover over but also to click on & open. Except I couldn't. Within seconds, I realized I could not click on anything anywhere on any NYT webpage. Not sure if this is helpful, but when I first started reading that 2nd article (the 1st instance of experiencing this problem), I don't at all remember doing anything that could possibly explain this? I know I didn't do something odd with my settings, certainly not anything specific to the NYT alone. Leaning heavily on my very vague & limited memory of the seconds/minutes just before 1st realizing my mouse was not being recognized as such while hovering over a hyperlink, I think it's possible that I somehow accidentally pressed on some weird combo of keyboard digits...? Is there some kind of shortcut that leads to this sort of change in user experience on a given website or domain?

-- I am able to VISIT any NYTimes site - whether it's the homepage, or an issue-themed section, or a specific article. I can reach these sites by typing the URL in the search bar (which I only do to reach the homepage, obviously), or by clicking on a hyperlink leading to a NYT webpage that I found amongst, say, the results of a Google News search, or perhaps I received an e-mail that references a NYT article & included a link to it. If I try to reach the NYT online from outside the NYT domain/websites, I face no problems doing so and viewing the webpage exactly as it's supposed to appear and does appear on other browsers simultaneously. The problem is maneuvering to anywhere else from that NYT webpage by clicking on something - anything - on it.

-- The mouse's scroll function does work. That means that upon arriving at any NYT article, I am able to navigate - really, just move up and down - to the effect that I am able to read the entire article (I have a NYT subscription, so access is not a problem). I can also scroll downwards using the keyboard, specifically by pressing the spacebar button. Perhaps most interestingly, I just realized that I can also scroll by clicking on the little rectangular sliding tab all the way to the right of the article, holding the click, and dragging/sliding the tab up to scroll up or down to scroll down. It seems that part of the screen is not considered part of the NYT webpage itself, where clicking on anything does absolutely nothing.

-- EXCEPTIONS (2): There seem to be 2 kinds of exceptions to my Firefox NYT problem. 1. The first is hardly an exception, it's simply that, upon arriving at a NYT webpage (via URL or hyperlink found in a non-NYT webpage or email or whatever else), before the page completely loads but has loaded enough that I can move my mouse around to various links & hyperlinks on the page, during those few seconds, or I estimate a maximum of 10 seconds (my Firefox browser can be pretty slow sometimes because of my bad habit of opening so many tabs in multiple windows), things are normal as far as the NYT page reacting to my mouse's presence as it hovers over links, and being able to click on those links and open new tabs for other NYT articles. But of course, this fleeting moment of hope that my problem has suddenly disappeared...disappears itself. 2. This makes no sense to me (not that any of this does). Simply put, every once in a while a NYT article/webpage will behave completely normally. Right now, in the Firefox window that contains this tab in which I'm writing to ya'll, I have 6 NYT articles open in separate tabs. 5 of them are exhibiting precisely the problem I've described above. But 1 of them https://www.nytimes.com/2024/11/18/ny.../new-york-city-homeless-children.html just doesn't...it's working totally fine for me right now. This isn't the only example of this sort of exception that I've encountered; there have been, I dont know...a handful of others? I can't really provide a decent estimate of how frequently I've encountered a properly working NYT page or what percentage of NYT pages have worked for me. It is a fraction of them though, a small fraction. And as far as I can tell, there is absolutely nothing distinctive or special or different about those articles. From my perspective, it seems totally random that they work while the vast majority don't. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it; it's simply as though whatever incredibly frustrating setting I've somehow inflicted upon my Firefox NYT experience occassionally forgets to implement itself? I'm at a loss.

PLEASE HELP!!! The NYT is a critical component of my media diet, which in turn is a criticial component of the learning & professional development I must currently be doing as part of my career & studies. Not to mention that I pay for a subscription that I'm having a great deal of difficulty making full use of. Does anyone have any idea what's going on here? How to fix it? I'd be forever indebted to you!! Thanks in advance!!!

Best, Kyro
