Log in fails to hold ... required to log in each time browser closes

Yahoo email password does not hold. (Yes, I check the box for it to keep me logged in.) Each time I close the browser in which I am viewing my Yahoo email or when I turn my computer off, I am required to re-enter my log in information when I return to a browser to view my Yahoo email. This also occurs in IE 8 and SeaMonkey 2.21

Yahoo says it's not them ... my log in was working fine until Mozilla recently made updates to its program.

I use Windows XP Professional. PLEASE HELP ME GET THIS FIXED.

Hello,

As far as I am aware Yahoo mail is configured with autocomplete=off to prevent any browser from saving passwords on that site.

See here for more: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/972407?esab=a&s=eddyc+yahoo&r=2&as=s

It is possible that you had a password saved in Firefox from before this change was made and that worked for a while but it has now been blocked and doesn't work any more.

There is a work around in the thread above.

I hope this helps. Let me know if not.

Thank you 71 solutions for the tip ... there is a box in Tools/Security that allows the user to enter addresses to prevent the saving of passwords. My box is EMPTY which I can only believe that I should be able to have all of my passwords saved.

Bottom line, Yahoo is still not saving the password.

I didn't spot the work around ... I'll need to check that out ... right now, I'm on my way out. Will check back later. Thanks again.

PS Does Mozilla have an 800 number or some way to deal with them directly?

Yes that setting will work for any website that allows password saving. If a website adds autocomplete=off to their code then they are indicating that passwords should not be saved and the browser will not offer to remember the password regardless of your settings. This is what yahoo have done.

You can work around this with a bookmarklet. See other thread.

Or with an add-on like Remember Passwords.

There is no 800 number for contacting Mozilla.

Thank you, eddyc ... I appreciate your time and suggestions. I don't know what I'm going to do at this point. I suffer from a brain injury so getting thru work arounds isn't as easy as it once was for me. I need to step away from this for a while.

Can you answer this ... if I bookmark this page, will I be able to get back to your comments or do these questions get shuffled off elsewhere?

Again, thank you for your time and assistance. Perhaps thru ongoing updates the glitch will be solved if I'm unable to get back to a fix.

You are very welcome. I hope my suggestions helped.

You can certainly return to this page at any time if you bookmark it. The page won't be moved but it may be locked after a period of time. Once the thread is locked you won't be able to add any additional comments. But you can always ask a new question at that stage if you want further help.

If you do choose to pick this up again then I think the simplest solution for your problem would be to install the Remember Passwords add-on.

Follow these steps:

  • Click here to open the Remember Passwords Add-on page.
  • Click on the 'Add to Firefox' button on that page.
  • A popup will appear. Click the 'Install' button to confirm that you want to install the add-on.
  • You will then see a notification telling you that the add-on will be installed after you restart Firefox. The notification will also have a button that lets you restart Firefox immediately if you like.
  • Click the button and Firefox will restart.
  • The add-on will then be installed automatically.
  • Navigate to your yahoo emails, log in as normal and you should now get the option to save your password.
  • Click to save the password.

Once you have completed those steps it should work for you from then on.

I hope that helps.

There are two different ways to be logged in to a website automatically:

  • Cookie: websites will set cookies with unique codes to identify your browser. When Firefox visits the site, it sends the cookie. This allows Yahoo to recognize you as you move from page to page. Unless you set Firefox to clear cookies when you shut it down, Yahoo's cookie should still be there the next time you start up and allow you to continue without logging in again.

In addition to Firefox's own settings for cookies, some add-ons and external security/privacy/cleaning software may remove cookies. We could go into this in more detail if you have been relying on Yahoo's cookies to stay logged in.
  • Password Manager: Firefox can automatically log you in to sites if you have it save passwords. As noted by eddyc, Yahoo's login form tries to prevent this, so it might not work well on Yahoo's site.

Like some other sites, Yahoo is sensitive to changes to your connection. If Yahoo suspects that some other browser is using your cookie to share (hijack) your session, it will require you to re-enter your password. This form is a bit different than the main login form because usually you do not need to re-enter your username.

Some add-ons and external software designed to make your browsing more private may trigger this re-authorization requirement because they change the IP address to which Yahoo is replying. If you think this is relevant to your situation, we could review your add-ons (particularly extensions) and see whether any of them is a likely culprit.
