When I reply to a message there is no text visible and it won't let me type. How can I fix this?
It is like the account is frozen, but only sometimes. I can click on a received message and it looks like a normal reply but it won't allow any text at all. If I try typing it doesn't show anything. Sometimes I turn off the computer and when it comes back on it does work, but not currently working. I did send a message about an hour ago but can't reply to anything in my inbox. Any suggestions?

Does this happen in Thunderbird safe mode? http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode
I tried to bring up the 'safe mode' option in help and can't see it. I have very limited computer knowledge and my friend and IT helper started me on Thunderbird years ago. I love to use this program but when I have any problems I get stuck and don't know what to do. Unfortunately my friend passed away a number of years ago and I don't know anyone else who uses Thunderbird. Do you recommend an IT guy?

It did work for the first message that I replied to but is not working with subsequent messages at all. I have tried opening Thunderbird again a couple of times (holding the shift key) with no success. Out of ideas here.....
Ok, I tried shutting down and restarting the computer and then doing the hold the shift key thing again. It seems to be working now.
Thanks everyone for writing.
If you can read the messages in safe mode but not otherwise, then either hardware acceleration or an extension is probably causing the problem. What you need to do is investigate the extensions by disabling them one by one and testing to find the one responsible. If none of them seem to be the cause, try disabling hardware acceleration.
