Firefox recently changed my primary language on ALL WEBSITES from English to French. I've tried to reset default language to English using Options>Language but it doesn't make the change. I've refreshed Firefox. I've removed both French and English as primary language and then chosen English again. Nothing works. Thanks for assistance.

That is strange! If you could check about mid-way down the following page, what does your "Internationalization & Localization" list look like? I'll paste mine for comparison:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

Internationalization & Localization Application Settings Requested Locales ["en-US"] Available Locales ["en-US"] App Locales ["en-US"] Regional Preferences ["en-US"] Default Locale "en-US" Operating System System Locales ["en-US"] Regional Preferences ["en-US"]

Kind of boring, I realize...

Quote: I've removed both French and English as primary language

Normally it wouldn't be possible to remove the language of the current Firefox locale (user interface language), so where/how are you making these changes ?

The setting in Options/Preferences is about the language for the user interface and the preferred language for webpages.

Are you possibly using a VPN or proxy with an exit node in a French speaking country ?

To JScher2000: You refer to "following page" but I don't see it. Would you pls. clarify?

This is about the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page.

To JScher2000--sorry. I was confused for a second but found the page. Here is it is.

pplication Settings Requested Locales ["en-US"] Available Locales ["en-US"] App Locales ["en-US"] Regional Preferences ["en-US"] Default Locale "en-US" Operating System System Locales ["en-US","en-BB"] Regional Preferences ["en-US"]

Thanks. Just to double-check on the Options page setting, because the buttons seem to have been rearranged, your Webpage language settings have English first:

Assuming so, there's no obvious reason for you to be getting pages in French unless, as cor-el suggests, sites are serving French because of what they perceive as your location based on your IP address.

The change from English to French happened just recently with no input from me. No change in IP address or other obvious factors. If the settings are as you would expect and there is no IP address change, am I just stuck?

If you check a site that reports on your location, does it match what you expect for your connection? For example: https://www.iplocation.net/

If you check a site that shows you the HTTP Requeset Headers sent by the browser, such as my page at https://jeffersonscher.com/res/jstest.php what does it show for "Accept-Language"?

As to location, yes, it matches correctly

Regarding Accept Language--this is what I get. Not sure what to do.

Full HTTP Request Headers: Host: jeffersonscher.com User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:87.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/87.0 Accept: text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,image/webp,*/*;q=0.8 dnt: 1 Referer: https://support.mozilla.org/ upgrade-insecure-requests: 1 te: trailers Accept-Encoding: br, gzip, deflate

In Firefox I typed in "request headers" and it pulled up this French language page. https://developer.mozilla.org/fr/docs/Web/HTTP/Headers

Hmm, why is Accept-Language missing from the headers?

I updated the second section of the page to check for the languages in a way scripts might check, either:

  • navigator.languages = en-US, en
  • navigator.language = en-US

Does that show up with fr ?

That was a search result on Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, Yahoo, or whatever site you normally search on?

This is what I got on French language version of Firefox

Full HTTP Request Headers: Host: www.jeffersonscher.com User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:87.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/87.0 Accept: text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,image/webp,*/*;q=0.8 Referer: https://www.google.com/ dnt: 1 upgrade-insecure-requests: 1 te: trailers Accept-Encoding: br, gzip, deflate

Could you scroll down to the next section where everything starts with "navigator" and check for navigator.language(s) there.

Also, when you searched for request headers in the address bar, did you get a page of search results or did your Firefox go directly to French Wikipedia?

Search for headers in address bar, French version. This is the first result that appears. https://developer.mozilla.org/fr/docs/Web/HTTP/Headers

On your site (using Firefox--french version) avigator.userAgent = Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:87.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/87.0 navigator.appName = Netscape navigator.appCodeName = Mozilla navigator.appVersion = 5.0 (Windows) navigator.platform = Win32 navigator.product = Gecko navigator.productSub = 20100101 navigator.buildID = 20181001000000 navigator.oscpu = Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64 navigator.hardwareConcurrency = 8 navigator.languages = en-US navigator.cookieEnabled = true navigator.doNotTrack = 1

I thought you had the U.S. English version of Firefox, judging from the information here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1331467#answer-1402911

So why is the search engine suggesting French websites -- where it is getting the hint that you prefer French language pages?

Does the address of the results page (in the address bar) mention a language preference? For example, on Google this might be indicated as the "hl" parameter. Otherwise, could it be a setting in the search engine itself? For example, on Google, it's set here: https://www.google.com/preferences#languages

On your site (using Firefox--french version) avigator.userAgent = Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:87.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/87.0 navigator.appName = Netscape navigator.appCodeName = Mozilla navigator.appVersion = 5.0 (Windows) navigator.platform = Win32 navigator.product = Gecko navigator.productSub = 20100101 navigator.buildID = 20181001000000 navigator.oscpu = Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64 navigator.hardwareConcurrency = 8 navigator.languages = en-US navigator.cookieEnabled = true navigator.doNotTrack = 1

That looks like what I would expect if your language preference is set to U.S. English.

You say: "I thought you had the US English version". I'm confused. Can we make sure we're on the same page? I have used the US Version for years and want to continue with that Version. I never changed to the French version. Nevertheless, for some reason FF loads the French Version (instead of US) by default. I typed https://www.google.com/preferences#languages --in the address bar and it loads the French Version. (I've tried many times to select US English but it doesn't want to cooperate with me. That's the essence of the problem. I CAN'T GET FF TO LOAD THE US ENGLISH VERSION AS MY DEFAULT.

You ASK: Does the address of the results page (in the address bar) mention a language preference? For example, on Google this might be indicated as the "hl" parameter. Otherwise, could it be a setting in the search engine itself? For example, on Google, it's set here: https://www.google.com/preferences#languages

I answered this in my last reply: On the French Version, it shows navigator.languages = en-US

Nevertheless, the Version shown on my screen is the French Version.

In address bar, I typed:

https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=mark+fox

Just a recap:

You have the en-US Firefox version and have an English Firefox user interface ?

If you open a website like Google then you get pages in French ?

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support to see if that has effect.

You can do a malware scan just to be sure.

After all of the time spent on unsuccessful troubleshooting (THANKS ANYWAY) I decided enough was enough and so I unstilled FF and reinstalled a new US English version. GUESS WHAT--It launched in French Version. There's something very wrong and it seemed to me we were just going round in circles. Unless someone really has a good new idea, I'll have to change my default browser--something I won't take lightly or be happy with.
