How can I keep incoming messages in chronological order, rather than having them grouped together by sender's name?

more options

After I open a message, when I next refer to my inbox I find that it has been grouped with other messages, either by sender's name or by subject line. As far as I am aware I did not ask for this and want messages to remain in my inbox in the chronological order in which they are received.

Click on the column header labeled DATE to sort by date. Click the same header a second time to reverse the sort order.

Clicking on the date column doesn't do it. It changes recent on top to recent on bottom, but messages are still grouped by sender or subject line.

I cant understand why people don't seem to "get" the question posed by Buster11. It is an absolutely obvious problem you find in Thunderbird and Gmail. Maybe people who don't get it just don't get as many emails as some of us, where the chronology of emails - from the SAME person - is critical.
