Since updating to 45.0, previewing pdf files in Thunderbird no longer works, the process gets stuck 'loading', even after I deletd any action for pdf files in Tools>Options>attachments>incoming as suggested at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1097225. Thank you for your help!

I already did that because at first, ThB 45.0 wouldn't display any messages anymore. Though in safe mode, ThB doesn't offer pdf preview at all. Running it as admin didn't help either.

There isn't really a message preview. Displaying a message in the message pane actually opens the message. I'd be surprised of Thunderbird would show the contents of an attached PDF in the message pane. Are you saying this did work for you? The message pane shouldn't just show 'Loading' though.

Try to start Windows in safe mode with networking enabled. - Win10 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/change-startup-settings-in-windows-10#v1h=tab01 - Win8 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-including-safe-mode - Win7 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

Still in Windows safe mode, start Thunderbird in safe mode. - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/safe-mode

Does the problem go away?

Thanks very much! I see that my description of the problem was too short. In ThB 31 (with WIndows 8.1/McAfee, btw), you got 3 options for attm.s: Save, open, preview. Preview would show the attm. in a new tab without actually 'opening' it. This option is still there in 45.0, but with me, it doesn't work anymore now; the tab opens, but the preview gets stuck 'loading'. Anyway, it's convenient but not essential, so please don't put any more work into it. Thanks again and best regards.

I thought there was no preview of pdf.... you have to open it using the appropriate software.

hang on...just had a thought, are you using 'Conversations' addon extension because I recall there being a 'preview' when using that addon ?

Yes I do. Sorry, I should have mentioned my addons. I also use Lightning, Folder Pane View Switcher, and Birdie Sync.

Performed a test. Enabled Conversations 2.11.3

As well as the bug for remote content: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1266356

I see the same issue - stuck on loading. I'm thinking this is another bug after the update and I'm currently using TB 45.1.0

After disabling Converstions addon, opening an attachment via usual method - selecting correct program - all works perfectly ok.

Many thanks. However, I don't have problems opening attm.s, it's just the 'preview' feature that doesn't work (updating to 45.1.0 just now hasn't changed that). For me, being able to use the Conversations addon is more important than the pdf Preview.
