In early Firefox versions there was a handy Add On named Bookmarks Synchonizer, the last version of which was updated by Torisugari. This allowed individual bookmark folders to be exported and imported.

Great for sharing information between colleagues, where you don't necessarily want them to have access to all your bookmarks folders.

Can this be done in Firefox 4? I can't see how to do it, and XMarks doesn't seem to offer this either.

I just figured out a brilliant way! Use http://xmarks.com/|Xmarks Xmarks!

You an sync your bookmarks online, and you can also choose which folders to sync. Sync only the folders you want to share/export, so only those show up on xmarks. Then when you export the bookmarks from xmarks, you have only the files/folder you wish.

Haha, in figuring this out, I'm sure I'll start using it!

Xmarks isn't a bad service to have anyway, and it only takes a couple minutes to get rolling.

Export the bookmarks to an HTML file and edit that file to remove unwanted bookmarks.

See:

You can also copy and paste that folder in an HTML editor.

That's tiresome. We had the original Torisugari system working in an office of 10 people, sharing bookmarks. An employee would work on a folder, finish it, export it, and everyone would import it.

It's not really practical to be hand-editing html in a large office, most of whom don't know html. From our perspective, what Firefox needs is to incorporate Torisugari

You can create a second Firefox Profile Folder that doesn't have any bookmarks.
If both instances of Firefox are open then you can copy and paste that folder or selected bookmarks from the Library of one instance to the Library of the other instance and export that selection to an HTML file. That is what I would do in this case. You need to open the second instance with the -no-remote command line switch.

I already use XMarks to synchronize all my folders. But how to combine using it as a global synchronizer, with using it to export individual folders to other people? That is really the problem.

Looks like cor-el {thanks} has the real answer again, though not the most elegant, as the Torisugari solution must have been (never had the pleasure, so I don't know what I missed).

I already have multiple profiles, so the cut and paste method should be no problem.

Actually, I set up one profile with a large format theme so I could see it on my TV and use my wireless keyboard and mouse from my recliner while I'm replacing Cable/Dish/DTV and browsing online TV entertainment.

Another profile is available to all my computers via WIFI and an external HD (one at a time).
