Retain all email in Thunderbird and manually delete in Hotmail.

How can I set up Thunderbird to allow me to "store" my downloaded email in Thunderbird instead of on the server. Then in Hotmail - I want to delete "specific" emails and folders "manually". I don't want to use a global delete option because when I travel I will need certain emails to remain on the server.

I deleted the first account I set up because it was an IMAP and that deleted from both server and Thunderbird which would be unusable for me.

I think I need a POP account setup but am not sure how to go about that in a manual configuration. Could you please explain the steps to do this? I run Windows 8.1 if that makes a difference.

Thank you so much for your reply.

If the 'New account' wizard defaults to IMAP, chose 'Manual Configuration'. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/manual-account-configuration

Note, you'll need to obtain the correct server settings from your email provider prior to setting up the account.
