Does this problem occur with a full URL such as https://example.com ? The top bar of the drop-down usually shows what Firefox intends to do with the text if you submit it at that point. Does the in-URL-bar autofill feature show you the address you want, or is it not suggesting either match? In case the problem is a cached redirect, you could clear the web cache: [[How to clear the Firefox cache]] (in the Clear Data dialog, don't remove all your cookies and site data, just clear the cache for now).
