I am trying to search for an email that was trashed and does not show up in the special search.

Try this, if you know the email was deleted. If not visible, enable the Quick Filter toolbar. 'View' > 'toolbars' > select 'Quick filter Bar'

Select the 'Deleted'/'Trash' folder. Type a word in the Quick Filter search which is likely to return what you are looking for. use the 'filter messages by: to modify results.
