Why is Trello very slow and resource-hungry after updating to Firefox Quantum?

Since the update to Firefox 57, boards in Trello have been unbearably slow - actions such as clicking and dragging a card to move it to another list or opening a card take tens of seconds, and my laptop fan spins up immediately upon opening the board.

Other websites work fine in Quantum, so it seems to be something specific to Trello or a technology that Trello uses.

Trello works fine in other browsers, e.g. the latest version of Opera. The Android Trello app on my phone is also working fine.
