I have a customer who has recently switched from Vodafone to Outlook.com for email.
When sending email, she hits send and is then shown the process of authentication where Thunderbird sends the login credentials and then the email. My customer is used to a Vodafone server that was open so did not require authentication and so never displayed this authentication process. This process makes it seem that Thunderbird is running a lot slower using outlook.com than it did using vodafone.
Is there a way of making Thunderbird not show this authentication process even though it would still do it in the background?

You can tell Thunderbird to remember the password, so that you don't have to type it again and again.

remembering the password isn't the problem, its the fact it shows you the whole authentication process. At no point does it require any input from the user its just that its showing you that authentication happening with the server. If i use a server that doesn't require authentication it doesn't show this process because it doesn't ever take place. Unfortunately this is no longer an option for this user.
I don't think I have ever seen Thunderbird do that. In fact, I recall requests asking specifically for some sort of progress bar or message box to be provided to reassure users that things are happening.
Most users asking for this seem to want it to look like their old Outlook Express, which ISTR had a pop-up window with progress bars.
Please provide a screenshot of this "authentication process" in progress.
The only thing I can think of is that I have to work with a brain-dead exchange/outlook/office365 server that demands I give it a certificate for the first posting of any session. There, I do have to click a button. But that's the only instance of anything approximating a visible "authentication" procedure that comes to mind.
