Immediately after automatically updated to Firefox 29.0 every single time I click a link to download any file, Firefox crashes. It also crashes when using cPanel (cPanel sometimes opens windows in a frame, or at least that's how in appears). Please see the most recent crash report below:

bp-72a0abfb-2dfb-419d-85e8-c260c2140508
bp-116890c7-2849-4ffd-aa1c-629562140508

I tried the following, which did not help:

  • Reset the profile
  • Turn off hardware acceleration
  • Remove and download list (downloads sqlite)

I sure would appreciate any help.

Thank you!

Chosen solution

Hi everyone!

I adapted a solution form here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/964662

  • I used another browser to download the Firefox install file.
  • I backed up my profile but did not delete it.
  • I renamed the directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox to read as C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox.BAK
  • I then installed Firefox.
  • When Firefox prompted the profile selection to start with, I selected the original default profile (the one I did not delete) as it had all my extensions, history, etc.
  • I then attempted to download a file and a pop-up prompt asked me where to save the file.

I can only assume that something in the auto-update broke at the time of update?

Hi,

Thanks for leaving some comments on your crash reports. It helped a little

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

Hi Moses,

I created a new profile. The first time I started Firefox and selected the new profile, it displayed the following error:

Installer integrity check has failed. Common causes include incomplete download and damaged media. Contact the installer's author to obtain a new copy. More information at: http://nsis.sf.net/NSIS_Error

When I visited the above link I think it's telling me that the "envelope" Mozilla used to deliver Firefox 29.x to my system was corrupt?

I assume I'm going to have to save my:

  • history,
  • cookies,
  • passwords,
  • favourites,
  • extensions

and the delete and reinstall Firefox 29.x?

Or... is there another way to fix the issue?

Thanks again for helping out! :)

Hi,

It seems like something is stopping the downloads. Firefox tried to make a copy of the link and the check for completeness failed. I think something is blocking the operation from completing, maybe it's your antivirus. Can you try to allow Firefox into your firewall and see if it'll go?

Also how much space do you have in your hard drive? Is your C drive full?
Try deleting downloads.sqlite again

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

Hi,

Sorry for the long information, I'm just trying to get as much troubleshooting steps as I can so we don't go back and forth too much.

Another suggestion would be to delete the downloads.rdf file in your Profile Folder with Firefox closed
You can get to the profile folder below:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory > Show Folder

or

  • Go to about:support and click Show Folder next to Profile Directory.

Thanks, it too a long time as I used another browser to download those files and scan as required.

There was no downloads.rdf file. I also noticed that last time, I thought it strange then.

Using all those files (Malwarebytes, Kaspersky, etc. did not find the issue. (The main things found were cookies).

Honestly I'm at a loss. As in my last post, I can create a new user profile, but cannot start Firefox with that profile. I can still start and use Firefox with the default profile (but crashes on download links)..

All this began very immediately after Firefox auto-updated to version 29.0 (just prior to this there were zero issues).

Here's the latest crash report:

https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/bp-db4aab4d-e434-49b9-8367-d1fbc2140508

Thanks muchly again for ANY help.

Hi,

Thanks for reporting back. I'm at a loss here too. Either I'm missing something in the crash report or I'm not giving you the right troubleshooting steps. There's one thing I haven't tried yet.... I've tagged this thread escalate so the professional SUMO HelpDesk can add something that I've maybe missed.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (orange Firefox button, top left corner (The image "new fx menu" does not exist. for v29+)/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: orange Firefox button, top left corner (The image "new fx menu" does not exist. for v29+)/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.
  • Windows/Mac: Go to Help > Restart with add-ons disabled
  • Linux: Run firefox -safe-mode in the Terminal/Konsole

Thank you.

When I start Firefox is safe mode, it still crashes when clicking any link to download a file. Here is the crash report issued when I was in safe mode:

https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/bp-13642927-2af7-4fed-a143-68eab2140508

Thanks again, looking forward. (I want to stop using IE or Chrome) ;)

Still crashes in Safe Mode, eh? Same crash report, same signature, same everything!

  • mozilla::net::BackgroundFileSaver::ProcessStateChange

I am literally out of ideas. I'm going to have to throw in the towel on this issue. I've already tagged this thread as escalate so expect something from them. Other contributors will try to jump in and solve this issue. Hopefully they can! I'm waiting on one particular person to jump in as he knows everything. ;)

Thanks Moses, I really appreciate that. Let's hope someone can find the cause and solution. :) It's appreciated.

Firefox immediately starts a download in the background and stores the downloaded file in the TEMP folder and doesn't wait for you to specify a name and download location.

It sounds that something goes wrong with this background loading.

Try to delete the Windows %temp% folder to see if it helps to let Windows create a new temp folder.

You can also try to boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) to see if that has effect.

more options

I tried deleting the %temp% folder, but WIndows does not allow that as files are in use.

I will try safemode with networking and downloading a file with Firefox in the morning.

Thanks for suggesting, I'll let you know if that worked (trying to download in safemode).

Thanks.

I also just finished trying the suggestion to boot into safe mode again, with networking. The results were the same, the updated (v.29) Firefox crashes on all downloads. Please see the crash report here: https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/bp-88f2ba8b-7db0-4116-a8d1-95f162140509

I suspect this might not be an issue with the profile or extensions? Also, I note that I can create any number of other profiles, but whenever I try to load Firefox with one of the new profiles, I get that NSIS_Error (see note about it in discussion thread), that (to me at least) suggests that the auto-update of Firefox was damaged?

Any help from anyone is welcome. I'm back to using IE and not enjoying that. Sorry for the IE dig.

Quick note: Is this significant? --> When I load Firefox, booted in safe mode, extensions don't load. When I load Firefox, booted in safe mode with networking, then extensions load. I thought booting in any safe mode would not load extensions?

THANK YOU to Moses and cor-el , you helped very much in pointing me the right way in terms of the thought process to get this fixed. I also appreciate your time and for providing valid and useful input!
