It depends. Firefox has a couple built-in choices, and also can interface with your system. This article has more info: Change the program used to open email links.
If you want to have Firefox use a webmail site that isn't listed, it's a bit more complicated because Firefox needs to be set up with the correct URL for composing a new message. Let us know if you need more information on that.
