I updated Firefox to 29 a few hours ago, and it cause a lot of problems. I just rolled back to ffx 28, but it didn't resolve everything. One thing that happened is that when I open a new tab, at the top it looks like a second tab, but when you look down at the tool tray, you see that there are actually two ffx windows open. If you mouseover the ffx icon (I'm in Windows 7), the two windows pop up. This didn't happen 6 hours ago. It came with ffx 29, but didn't go away with downgrading to 28. This is really annoying. I'd prefer to have tabs grouped within windows. Mostly I have one window open with all my tabs in it, but other times I want to have several tabs in each of several different windows, because that organization works for me. How can I get rid of this?

Chosen solution

Could you check the following setting:

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Tabs

The last checkbox is: "Show tab previews in the Windows taskbar".

I'm pretty sure you need to uncheck that and it should resolve your issue.

Success?

By the way, what issues did you have with Firefox 29? Obviously you needed Classic Theme Restorer to move your tabs back below the address bar. What were the other things?

Thanks for your help. Unchecking the options > tabs > "Show... " did the trick.

Too many to list. I don't even remember all the problems I had to deal with. I spent ~3-4 hours trying to get ffx 29 the way I wanted, and half of the things suggested made problems worse or created new problems. The multiple tabs / windows thing was one; another was that I couldn't get the buttons I wanted arranged the way I wanted; another was that I couldn't get the addresses of hyperlinks I mousedover to show up in the status bar (or anywhere); another was that the statusbar itself disappeared w/ ffx 29 & uninstalling / reinstalling the Status-4-Evar extention didn't bring it back (I ultimately had to do the reset ffx trick & start everything over from scratch); another was that I couldn't get the "File Edit ..." to show up & stay (I learned that hitting F10 made it appear, but as soon as I did anything, it would disappear again). I honestly don't remember all of the problems I had, but I couldn't resolve them with several hours of Googling & frustration, and it seemed like everything was problematic. Thanks again.

For future reference, here are a few notes:

(1) You will need an add-on to re-create the Add-on Bar. Currently, I am aware of two extensions for this:

Then Status-4-Evar should be able to use the Add-on bar to re-create the status bar. At least, I think that's how it works, I don't use it myself.

Because Status-4-Evar takes control of the messages that appear when you mouse over a link, you then should be able to see those, or you can disable this extension and they will appear above the bottom of the document (above the Add-on bar if it is displayed).

(2) To display the classic menu bar persistently, you can use one of these methods:

  • tap the Alt key or F10 > View menu > Toolbars > Menu Bar
  • right-click a blank area of the tab bar (or the new tab "+" button on the tab bar) > Menu Bar
  • "3-bar" menu button > Customize > Show/Hide Toolbars > Menu Bar

And please feel free to use this forum if Google doesn't get you and answer in a reasonable amount of time.

Thanks for your help. I'll stay with ffx 28 for now. We'll see how it goes.
