I imported my Favorites from I.E., but when I add a new Bookmark in Firefox, I do not see my folders from I.E.

I can see my imported Favorites in the Bookmark Menu but when I go to add a new Bookmark I can't put that Bookmark directly into a folder that I imported. Looks like I have to create a new folder every time for each new category.

Your imported bookmarks from IE should all be in one folder named "From Internet Explorer". The imported Bookmarks are kept separate for easier identification by the user. You can move them to other folders outside of that folder if you wish; you can also delete any duplicates that you may have placed into Firefox Bookmarks/folders before the import.

I did have a folder "From Internet Explorer", but my problem is that when I add a new Bookmark those folders from I. E. don't show up at the time I'm adding the new bookmark, so I can't put them directly into the folder (that I transferred from I.E). I've had to put them in Bookmark Menu and then go back and transfer them to the folder I want them to go in. The only way I can put them directly in a folder is to create a new folder which then will be saved in Bookmark Menu. Sounds confusing - don't know if I'm getting my point across well.

As you have found out, when IE Favorites are imported using the Import Wizard (during the installation procedure or from using File > Import; in Firefox 7: Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import and Backup > Import data from another browser), they end up in a separate folder named something like "from Internet Explorer" and the folders from your prior browser are not transferred. I don't understand the reasoning for doing it that way, but it's been that way always.

When you import a bookmarks HTML file using the Show All Bookmarks Library window, those bookmarks are appended to the existing Firefox bookmarks in basically the same folder setup as they were in the other browser, they are placed below any existing Firefox bookmarks. They aren't placed in their own folder labeled "from Internet Explorer" as done when using the "Import Wizard".

  • Export your IE favorites in HTML format, and then import that file into Firefox.
  • In IE: File > Import/Export - Export to HTML file (give it a unique name like IE2FFbookmarks.html and put it in a place easy for you to find for the next step)
  • then in Firefox: Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import & Backup - Import HTML (browse to the html file that you created in the previous step)
  • After verifying that everything imported correctly into Firefox you can delete the "From Internet Explorer" folder created by the Import Wizard, if you wish.

That was good information but it didn't solve my problem. I still can't put new bookmarks directly into folders I transferred from I. E.

  1. Did you import the HTML file of your IE Favorites?
  2. After doing so, you can not put Bookmarks into the imported IE folders?

Please explain the procedure that you are using to try to put new Bookmarks into those IE folders.

more options

Create a new folder for the imported IE Favorites and move them from the "From Internet Explorer" folder to that folder.
