I am trying to connect thunderbird to either Gmail or Outlook accounts. When I attempt to do so I receive an error "Configuration could not be verified - is the user name or password wrong?"

With gmail I have - turned off 2 step authentication - enabled pop3 + imap - enabled less secure apps

However, both pop3 and imap settings return the same error.

With the outlook.com account I have not performed any additional "security" actions, when I attempt to connect I receive the same error.

Please can you advise what I can do to get either of these connections working?

I managed to find the cause of the problem. My ISP was blocking the appropriate ports to allow connection.

It would be really helpful if the error messages available were a little more robust than username / password incorrect as it was not even obtaining a connection with the server let alone attempting to submit authentication details.

The usual cause in anti virus programs tring to scan the mail on the account configuration wizard. Turn off the mail scanning component before trying to add a new account.
