On a specific website, when I left click a link it opens but when trying to open the link in a new tab, the new tab opens blank and "javascript:subValue(1)" is seen in the address bar. This website hosts many, many images which I hope to download using a bulk image save addon but those images must first be in separate tabs. Opening these links in new tabs is vital to the process.

Type about:config in your Address bar "search" for browser.newtab.url and change the value to "about:newtab"

You may need to open the links in windows to make this work.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window or otherwise make changes.

I tried both responders' advice with no luck. When following iamjayakumars's steps, and double-clicking on "browser.newtab.url" to input a new value, "about:newtab" was already there as the default value.

While following corel's advice for "browser.link.open_newwindow" and "http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction" I tried inputting every possible value but still received "javascript:subValue(1)" in the address bar when ctl+leftclicking on the link.

PS when changing values in about:config, do I have to restart firefox inorder to see an effect?

Hello,

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

I should have mentioned this before but I tried the same open link in new tab action using both internet explorer and chrome but they too have similar results. I think chrome opens the link and the tab's address is "about blank".

Considering that the problem persist across multiple browsers, I don't believe resetting firefox would work.

Check for malware..

Try with Combofix to clean your system

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

again, considering the fact that the problem persists across various browsers - I doubt the cause is due to malware or a virus.

I've added a view images illustrating my problem

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:

Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.

  1. Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
  2. After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
  3. Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    • Windows:
      • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    • Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
    • Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
  4. Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    1. Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    2. Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

Please report back to see if this helped you!

You can only open such JavaScript links in the current tab.
If you try to open them in a new tab then the context is lost and you get an empty page.
So this isn't possible.

I see... no way around it huh? Not even any special addons that are able to work around the issue?

There is an extension for submitting forms (TabSubmit), but I don't know a solution for images or left-clicking in general.

Thanks for your advice and input - This may well be an unfix-able problem but I'll leave it "unsolved" indefinitely and continue checking back on the post. Maybe someone will know of some different or new solution.
