Option to set window as main / default?

more options

Now when I open more browser windows I have to be very careful while closing them, because Firefox remembers tabs from last closed window only. If I make a mistake and close the window with my pinned favourite tabs, before I closed other window(s), then I will lost my tabs :(

Does Firefox have the option to set current window as main/default and remember for the user which tabs should be opened next time?

Hi mrfx, three things:

(1) Don't close windows!

If you want Firefox to restore all of your current windows when you restore your session at the next startup, instead of closing them to exit Firefox, use the menu command. Either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Exit
  • (menu bar) File > Exit

Then when Firefox starts up, all windows will be launched when you restore your session.

(2) Firefox remember up to 3 closed windows

If you closed a window and need to re-open it during your session, or at the next startup after restoring your session, you usually can.

To find the list of closed windows, either:

  • Library toolbar button () > History > Recently Closed Windows
  • (menu bar) History > Recently Closed Windows

Of course, you need to do that promptly because the moment you open a new window, one of the older ones is cycled off the list.

(3) You can set Firefox to remember more closed windows

If 3 is not enough -- I actually have mine set to 10 "just in case" -- you can modify this setting. Bear in mind that this could be a slight drag on performance and also has privacy implications if someone is trawling for data in your Firefox profile folder.

(A) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful or accepting the risk.

(B) In the search box above the list, type or paste sess and pause while the list is filtered

(C) Double-click the browser.sessionstore.max_windows_undo preference and edit 3 to the desired value and click OK.

Hopefully, that covers it!

Thanks FredMcD, that's interesting, but unfortunately this not solve the problem, since aside from pinned tabs I really need to keep setting that start Firefox with tabs from last session.

If you want to open the browser to how it looked like when you closed it, look at How to set the home page link above and look at When Firefox Starts

This will reopen tabs from last closed window. It will not reopen tabs from specific window I would like to setup.

If I restart system while Firefox is running, then after reboot Firefox will reopen all it's last opened windows, but if I had closed FF's windows manually then it will not open all closed windows, and it is OK, because FF cannot know if I have closed these windows intentionally or not.

I miss an option to set speciific window as "always reopenable with all of its last tabs". AFAIK all other browsers miss such an option too.

Okay, how about this; Create a batch program to open Firefox and list each tab you want to be opened in it. Example; (All one line)

C:\PROGRA~1\MOZILL~1\firefox.exe Website.one|Website.two|Website.three

Note the use of | between each website.

FredMcD, this make no sense. As I have written already - aside from few pinned favourite websites I'd like to reopen other tabs I have opened last time in specific FF window. These tabs are different every day.
