Please ask the Thunderbird quicktext addon developer to read the forum
There are already detailed bug reports on the new problem with the Quicktext extension to Thunderbird posted in the appropriate places. But no developer seems to be reading them so that they get fixed. If you know how to contact the Thunderbird quicktest developer, please ask him or her to read the bug reports and fix the problem that first happened with the release of TB version 45.0 (release channel).
Some of us rely on quicktext for our business, so this is urgent.
Thank you!

Airmail, the issue is with the downloading from Dropbox. Chromium handles it just fine and I suspect Chrome would too.
In Firefox, I had to enter it as a search term and then select from the search results one that showed it as a link, where I could right-click and download using "Save link as".
DavidSpector, it's kludged this way because the original author hasn't chosen to provide an update. Various users have worked together to fix it, but they don't have the access to amo to provide it via the usual formal channels.
You could probably also get it by right-clicking the link below:

This forum will, I hope, show it as a link. The comments area on amo appears not to activate URLs. Or it may just be the silly quote marks around it that suppress it.

There appears t be a patched version for TB45.0 here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/quicktext/
Thank you! However, according to the instructions, I entered "https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/982735/quicktext.tbird.45.xpi" into my Firefox address field then pressed Enter. The result was an error message (cannot install software) and a blank page. It was not possible to continue with the instructions for installing the version 45 bug fix for Quicktext. Why are we not using the standard procedures for installing addons?

The instructions are in the notes of the Add on developers site. You hopefully know that add ons are 3rd party software and supported by the add on author.
Why would you be trying to install a Thunderbird add on in Firefox anyway?
The instructions say to "download" that file. The usual way to download a file is by using a browser. Please share what you know. The instructions to install a Thunderbird addon, given a URL, are unclear.
Here are the instructions on the add on site. Instructions: - Go to Extras-Addons and remove Quicktext - Download Quicktext from the Link above - Open the folder with the downloaded file in explorer - Drag the downloaded xpi file to Thunderbirds addons tab - a install dialog will be opened .
If they do not work or you cannot follow them ask the developer.
Yes, these are the instructions. But I don't see what you are seeing. The second instruction, as I said, is "download Quicktext from the link above". What does this mean to you? First, it is not displayed in Firefox as a link. It is a URL shown as text. The natural thing to do is to copy the text into the address bar of the browser and press Enter. Have you actually tried this, or are you being dismissive or arrogant with me? Rudeness is not helpful in any forum, even if you are a "top 25 contributor".

The author's support forum for this Quicktext extension is at http://extensions.hesslow.se/forum/ as is listed on https://addons.mozilla.org/thunderbird/addon/quicktext/
Personally, I wouldn't choose to invest in QuickText. This isn't the first time it has hiccupped.
I use Clippings for similar purposes, but I don't know how well it handles the variable substitution. Clippings can prompt for user-inserted text via a dialogue box, but I don't know how that stacks up against the way QuickText works.
Zenos, Wow! That worked right away, and Quicktext appears to be fixed!
Thank you! Your is the first posting on this subject that actually worked for me.
Now, if only the many others affected by this bug could be helped similarly, such as by a message that every TB user will be shown.
I see that the list of instructions, buggy as it is, has already been deleted from the official Extensions page inside of Thunderbird.
May God help all of us from our rigid or inadequate communication policies and procedures. And thank you so much for sharing what you know.
