startup taskbar shows "Mozilla (4)" when I hover over the Firefox button

more options

I have a Firefox button on my taskbar when I start my computer. When I hover over it, it says "Mozilla (4)". The button is not stacked. This happened once before, after a Mozilla update--it showed "Mozilla (3)"; a Google search suggested I unpin the button from the taskbar and then pin it again (I think I clicked on the Start button and then right-clicked on the Mozilla Firefox shortcut to unpin and then pin it again.) I think the answer said it had to do with a new update. I think it fixed the problem, but it seems to have recurred after the most recent update. I couldn't find the issue when I did a Google search this time. I haven't tried the unpin/pin process yet. It is just annoying.

Note: after I click on the button, the Mozilla Firefox browser opens in one tab. When I hover over the Firefox button on the taskbar, it shows one window is open. I don't open multiple Firefox windows; I open new tabs.

The only problem I have that may be connected is in the "Shortcut Scan" in my JetClean program: it takes a long time to scan the files in users/user/local/appdata/Mozilla/Firefox/profiles. ; I am not computer-savvy enough to know if it has anything to do with the Firefox button issue.

Why is this happening? Does is have to do with updates and, if so, can Mozilla Firefox fix the problem?

I always thought the way the Taskbar worked was determined by Windows and not by Firefox. Firefox does make changes to the jumplist -- the list that appears on right-click -- and has a setting for whether to display every individual tab in every window, or only the active tab in every window.

When the button says Mozilla (4), are there currently four separate Firefox windows, or one window with 4 tabs, or does the 4 have no explanation?

Or... if this appears when Firefox is not running, it may be that Firefox was unable to delete the original shortcut and had to create a new one and added (4) to prevent file name duplication.

There is an old discussion of this kind of problem here:

But before trying to make changes, I suggest shutting down and restarting Windows in case there are queued installation tasks that the Windows installer needs to finish. Those should all be completed before making any changes or there could be additional confusion.
