Why do I sometimes get a warning that a message cannot be written to the Sent folder

I sometimes get a warning that my message cannot be written to the Sent folder. I do not know whether the message has been sent and I don't think that it relates to the size of the message. I have been able to check on one occasion that the message had actually arrived at its intended destination and I am now trying to check a recent message which gave rise to the warning. When the warning appears the message is not written to the Sent folder. This problem is similar to one which has been asked about messages from sub-folders but my problem does not seem to be restricted to sub-folders. I use Talktalk but I cannot see why that should cause the problem. Any ideas?

Is this a POP account?

Is this Google or outlook/Hotmail?

Both of these providers write outgoing mail to the sent folder when it passes through their mail server. Thunderbird does as is supposed to occur and also writes the mail to the same folder. The result is either duplicates in the folder or error such as you are seeing.

If it is those two providers, in Thunderbird right click the account in the folder pane. Select settings. In copies and folder for the account, turn off the option to save the sent mail anywhere. (The mail server will save it and it will sync back to you through IMAP.)
