I have migrated from clearwire to gmail and I want to continue using Thunderbird. I have created a new gmail account in Thunderbird. I closed Thunderbird and reopened it. When I create a new email via Thunderbird the FROM address shows the following: [email protected] >[email protected]. The people receiving my emails see the old clearwire address in the from box. First I was surprised that I did not see my [email protected] but instead I see [email protected]. How do I get Thunderbird to use this new gmail address properly? Also, I am hoping that the folders I have in Thunderbird, that were created while using clearwire, will still be accessible with my new gmail account, is this correct? Thanks for your help.

What you do need to do is remove your clearwire SMTP entry.

Tools menu (ALT+T) > Account settings > outgoing server (SMTP)

If you check your Account Settings dialog (available from the 3-bar menu under Options, or the classic Tools menu), what do the settings reflect? For example:

  • Gmail account: Server Settings = IMAP or POP?
  • Clearwire account: is this still there? if so, please don't delete just yet. Server Settings = IMAP or POP?
  • Outgoing mail: if you have a separate entry for outgoing server, check to make sure it switched over to Gmail.

Under *settings *> "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" of the clearwire account, their support staff had me enable POP so we could transfer the emails from clearwire to the new gmail account and it is *still enabled.*

Also, IMAP is *enabled*

When I click he *3 bar ico*n in the upper right of the screen under

  • tools*there is nothing pertaining to a server, nor is there anything

about the server under *settings* in this.

I get the same results when sending from the new gmail address directly or from Mozzila Thunderbird

Do you think I need to disable the POP setting in the clearwire account since everything has migrated now? Would this solve our current issue?

Thanks

Right now, I'm on a computer that doesn't have Thunderbird. I think you can open the Account Settings dialog from the classic Tools menu. Tap the Alt key, and the old menu bar should appear near the top of the window, then Tools > Account Settings.

I would leave POP enabled on your Clearwire account, and keep retrieving it in Thunderbird, until they start rejecting all new mail sent to it. Otherwise, things may accumulate there without your knowledge. After that, you should be done with it.

OK, I went into Thunderbird as you directed and found the following: Server name >IMAP.googlemail.com port> 993 User name> [email protected]

When I tried to change the user name to the new gmail email address, it would not let me and gave me a message saying the the gmail address already exists. I think the user name is what appears with the outgoing emails from both the clearwire account and the new gmail account. When I cancel the clearwire account do you think all this will correct itself? I also turned POP services on again on the clearwire account. Thanks for all your help.

If Thunderbird thinks you already set up your Gmail account separately, can you find a different account for it in Account Settings? They should all show there. (Account name in the left column, and different panels for that account indented underneath.)

For what it's worth, when I check Google's instructions for IMAP to Gmail, these settings are listed:

Incoming Mail (IMAP) Server - Requires SSL
       imap.gmail.com
       Port: 993
       Requires SSL:Yes
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - Requires TLS
       smtp.gmail.com
       Port: 465 or 587
       Requires SSL: Yes
       Requires authentication: Yes
Use same settings as incoming mail server
Full Name or Display Name: [your name]
Account Name or User Name: your full Gmail address ([email protected]). Google Apps users, please enter username@your_domain.com
Email address: your full Gmail address ([email protected]) Google Apps users, please enter username@your_domain.com
   Password: your Gmail password

Hi Based on your last email, I located 2 accounts in Thunderbird & the following parameter are associated with each account:

'First account name '> [email protected] (I believe this is associated with the clearwire account.

'user name' > [email protected]

'server name '> imap.googlemail.com (not imap.gmail.com) 'port' >993 'requires SSL' >SSL/TLS (not yes)

'Second account name '> [email protected] (this is the new gmail account 'user name' >[email protected] server name> imap.googlemail.com ('not' imap.gmail.com) 'port '>993 requires SSL > SSL/TLS (not yes) So, do you have any suggestions on what I should change to correct my initial problem of sent email showing the from address as the clearwire account before I cancel the clearwire account? Thanks for your patience and help. Dennis

Tools menu (ALT+T) > Account settings > outgoing server (SMTP)

In following your suggestion, I noticed that as part of the outgoing server, there was a user name which happened to be the clearwire address. So, I changed the user name to the new gmail address. Bingo my problem was solved. Now when I send out an email from Thunderbird, if I use either the still active clearwire account or the new gmail account the the from email address shows the new gmail address.

Thank all of you for your suggestions we finally determined how to solve my problem. Denis
